Well This is Awkward...

So... Me and Mariss didn't end up going running at 6:30am.

Instead... we slept.

BUT in our defense we went running again that evening. We are running buddies now and I love every second of it.

So for those of you who actually read and check in on me (Mom, Susan, Aunt B and Emma) sorry I lied. The alarm went off. We texted about it and agreed on a more rationale time.

Anyway. Yay for running. When I get the money I need to get new shoes. Oh the life of a poor college student.

Just a couple of runnin' fools.

Crazy

Welp. I think I am legitimately crazy. I just set my alarm for 5:30am. Why? To get up to go running with Mariss at 6. Yes, I do want to commit myself.

I'm not sure if it's in the water... all I know is that I've gone crazy.

No picture for this one. I can only imagine what a 6am run looks like.

It’s been awhile…

It’s been an awful long time since I’ve updated my blog. This happens to be both painfully normal and abnormally unsatisfying. Allow me to explain:
1)     Normal- I never update my blog. Ok, never is too harsh of a word. I have a hard time of consistently updating my blog. Or maybe, I frequently do not update my blog. Yea, basically I struggle.
2)      Painfully- I want to blog. I really do. I think about good posting ideas. And then I even write posts in my head as I walk home/across campus. I just never put them in writing. Blogging time is so elusive that way.
3)      Unsatisfying- I want to blog. And then to have all these thoughts and discussions locked up in my head, it’s very disruptive. I mean think of it from my perspective. You have all these things you are thinking about saying and then never get them out because you’re too busy with school, work and everything else that claims your time. In the words of Mika “The things we left unsaid, are only taking space up in our head.” And some days, my head is very full.
4)      Abnormally- should one really be worried about not blogging? I would think not. But, who am I to make such a general assumption for a large population of half-bloggers (a group to which I belong).
I have nothing too notable happening. Well, except that I am feeling a sort of blog-arthis. or a blog catharsis. (Side note: I just looked up catharsis to make sure it really was the word I wanted to use… and I found that one of the definitions was cleansing or purging of the bowels… Totally using that from here on out.) Well, the definition was an emotional release brought about by an intense emotional experience. And that isn’t exactly the definition my 7th Grade English teacher taught us when we read the best-selling novel, Into Thin Air by Jon Krakower.
I did not have an intense emotional experience, like previously mentioned, but I do feel like I just want to put some things down in writing.
First: One word…
SUMMER. A word not typically shrouded in uneasiness. In fact in my previous years it’s been nothing but excitement. No school. Going home. Ecuador. Summer jobs. Did I mention no school? Anyway, this year it’s a little more complicated. I just have a lot of things happening. And I need a schedule. Not really until January… but, I am just the planning type. I love spontaneity. But, I like to have my feet under me while I’m running. If that makes any sense at all. (Side note: I am not uneasy for the much anticipated arrival of William Daybell. In fact I am quite the opposite. I can’t wait. In that aspect Summer 2013 can’t come soon enough.)
CANCER. My mom is officially cancer free. Raise the rough. Shout for joy. Or jump for it. Party like a rockstar. And any other phrase/ditty that seems appropriate for the situation. But, really. Holy cow. What a ride? I could not be any happier. And I am hoping with all of me that it remains gone. Or at least far far away… and never comes back. (Lion King, anyone?)
PEOPLE. Allow me to introduce some new people to the blogging sphere. I will most definitely be mentioning them in future posts. Emma. Jen. Kate. Jeff. Mason. Joe. Good friends. I hope to keep them around for a while.
MISSIONS. Aside from the obvious reason I might mention this… everyone is going. Not just boys but girls. And I mean everyone. I have had more invites to mission farewells than I did all freshman year. And that’s impressive because I was in TWO different wards. So, I got a lot of farewell invites. Don’t get me wrong, missions are awesome. In fact, missions are admirable. And wonderful and those who choose to serve have my utmost respect. It’s just, everyone is going.
MARRIAGE. If you’re not going on a mission… you’re engaged. Or newly married. Or having a baby. Again the institution of marriage is a wonderful blessed thing. But, when you’re not going on a mission, with no boyfriend (at least in the country) and everyone else is…
Anyway, Thanksgiving is coming up. I have much to be thankful for. And I fear that this blog has sounded very petty, and annoying and ungrateful. But, I promise I am so thankful. So very very thankful.

Hard to find...

People are plentiful.
Friends can be found just about anywhere.
Good friends are hard to come by.
Best friends are far and few between.

I feel like that's kind of a poem? Ha, I know it's not though.

Ignore the wall of sexy men behind us!

Getting close to try and fit Yosemite falls in the picture...

Add caption

Don't mind me... Just chillin at the beach with my cabinet.

Thermal cam... guess neither of us are very "hot" (get it?)

Ignore the ever lengthing mullet... it has since been removed.

I love my cousin. :) <3
Best friends are just that. They're the best. Best friends should bring you up, make you want to be better. They are what's good for you and you hope that as you grow and progress they'll always be what's good for you. Sometimes, they aren't though.

I have always liked having a few close friends. And then plenty of other just good friends. And that's kinda what I have now.

A best friend is hard to come by. But, to come by as many as I have is rare. They all mean so much to me. I don't wanna do lists. Because people get hurt when you do lists. (I am missing a few pictures of some of my best friends on this blog... these are just ones that were taken recently).

They say a good friend picks you up when you fall down. A best friend laughs, says "walk much?!" and then helps you up.

A good friend bails you out of jail. A best friend is there in the cell with you saying "man that was fun."

A good friend is always nice. A best friend lets you have it when you deserve it.

A good friend loves you. A best friend loves you unconditionally.

A good friend is there for you. They ask how you're doing. A best friend knows how you're doing and is there without you asking.

I am beyond blessed with the people in my life. Especially at a time that has been emotionally hard for me... I have never felt as much love from the friends I have (near and far) as I have this school year.

To the good friends of this world... I salute you. To the best friends I congratulate you for you truly have found something wonderful.

"A best friend is a single soul dwelling in two bodies." (If that's the case... my soul is split into 5 bodies... 2 more and I'll have just as many best friends as Voldemort has horucruxes... nerd joke!)

I Work Out...

So, it's been two weeks since this whole "transformation" process began. For those of you who don't know... I am working out. I have a couple of goals. Hard goals to reach but, Kara and Jenna are right there with me! Anyway, this post is more just a facilitator for pictures:

So, this is our photo shoot before we went in...

The Cleaning Struggle.

OK. Whoever enjoys cleaning is lying. They love it being clean. I love it being clean. And coming from a relatively messy/organized person that means something. Right? Right.

Our apartment ever since we began cooking goes through dishes like CANDY. I feel like the sink is always full of new dirty dishes and the dishwasher is always ready to be unloaded. Either that or it's running.

I like organized chaos. OK. That's a lie. I tend to try and organize everything and put it in it's proper place... it's the putting things back that I am not so good at. And thus the cycle begins. Clean.... a shirt here... a jacket on the back of this chair.... a scarf that would really take 2 seconds to fold and put in it's bin has now temporarily found it's place on my bed... and then BAM! Just like that... the mess is back. And I am forced to clean. And it's not so much a mess... I mean all the clothes ARE folded. They just aren't put away. A folded stack on this chair... a folded stack on the floor... a couple jackets on the back of a chair... I mean who cares?

I do. It's weird. I like it clean. I like it organized. It bugs me to come into my room and see it messy... but, it's SO easy to keep it messy.

Same with the kitchen. I was taught to wash the pots and pans... but, my roommates put them in the dishwasher! So, they take up valuable space and then we have dishes in the sink. It bugs me, but I am not willing to wash EVERY pot and pan by hand... so the alternative will have to do.

Also, not having a vacuum is gross. We have to walk to the main building "check out" a vacuum and bring it to our apartment. And you get 30 minutes. Also... we live on the third floor. And they aren't nice light Oreck vacuums. They are the metal heavy ones. I broke last... Saturday night. And I decided we were NOT going anywhere till we got the carpet cleaned. I couldn't take it anymore. I hated coming into any room that had a floor. (Get it... every room) because it was NASTY! So, all 3 of us went to get one... Kara picked it out and carried it up the stairs. I started vacuuming and just couldn't stop. EVERY surface was vacuumed. Or.. just the floors. And then I finished the whole apartment, Jenna picked up the vacuum and carried it back down and we returned it. T is for team effort. Haha anyway, I kinda like vacuuming so, it was good.

Paper towels. OH HOW I MISS THOSE THINGS. Kara and I bought some from the creamery with the last of her meal plan... and they disappeared. I don't really know where they went? I need to check my car. Who knew you could miss something like... paper towels. I need them. I find myself in the kitchen yearning for a paper towel. Add that to the grocery list would ya?

The stove. Our stove gets SO dirty. We actually use it this semester... and it's white. And things magically just spill on it. Kinda annoying. And it quickly looks gross. But, we do a good job of maintaining and making sure it gets wiped up.

Next apartment I live in... Needs more homey-ness to it. Ours feels like a home cause Jenna and Kara are awesome! And I love living with them! And we are all BFF's. It just struggles to look like a home. Instead it looks like a home for troubled youth. And believe me... I'm troubled. But, I am no longer a youth.

Anyway, the apartment is getting clean. It's the staying clean part. Kinda stinks. I never realized how much my mom must HAVE to do to keep our house clean. I have been to downright DIRTY houses and I have been to ours... and I have been to one's in between. And I'll tell you what. My mom is Superwoman. Our house is awesome. And clean. And homey. And just kinda perfect.

One day... when I grow up... I'll be just like my mom! Fingers crossed... I have a long way to go!

Cleaning checks this Saturday... YESSSSSSSSSSSS.

Pinterest Saved Our Wall...

Pinterest has been known to save a lot of things...

Weddings, wardrobes, friendships, craft time, vacation spots... you name it Pinterest has saved it. Well, it's really come through again. Pinterest saved our wall.

Our "living" room is pretty awesome. We have it lined with movie posters and even one of Justin Bieber. Well, we rearranged our posters to make room for our NEWEST edition... the poster me, Kara and Nikki made.

It's pretty sweet. Basically... we bought 120 crayons. Then we organized them by color and shade. After which we hot glued them to a poster board... and then took our hair dryers and melted them. Thus creating the BEST piece of artwork I have ever been a part of! Take a look for yourself... but, let me just say it one last time: Thank you Pinterest for saving our wall!!

The crayons are glued...

The finished product!!

Kara and I deciding where to put this masterpiece!

Walah! (Keep your mouth shut... we know it's crooked but it's too late to fix!)
I also decided I am going to take JUMBO crayons... and hot glue them all the way around my first born's nursery. Instead of wall paper or patterns... they are going to have the most epic, crayon melted room EVER!

Let the Workout Begin...

Workout- Noun. A session of vigorous physical exercise.

I guess I should start by explaining what this post is all about. First of all I gained a little bit of weight last semester. Not that it would be really noticeable to anyone but myself. But, I figured it was better to lose the weight now instead of risk that I add more on top of that this semester. However, when I tell people all that I normally get a scene similar to Mean Girls... Regina George: "I really wanna lose 3 pounds..." (silence) (hurriedly) Gretchen Weiners: "Oh my gosh why you're so skinny!?"

Just kidding! I don't tell anyone the reason for me and my roommates starting weight watchers (our own little small group... it's free this way) and our own 30 day shred.

With a lot of help from my mom on the weight watchers side of things (she has all the materials), we've devised our plan of how many "points" we get per day. Then we sit down and make a schedule of what days we are eating what and how many points etc... and then we grocery shop. AND all 3 of us stick to it! I like to think that I spearhead the food side of things, but Kara helps a lot as well.

Kara, is our Jillian Michaels... she is the workout Queen. And let me tell you my abs are feelin' it today!

It went something like this...
Me: "Kara, I can't go here my shorts are too short."
Kara: "They don't care... girls are here with shorter shorts than you."
Me: "I can't go. I look like a lesbian in work out clothes."
Kara: "You DO NOT look like a lesbian. I think you could pull of a really cute sweatband/headband thing though... but you look too girly to be a lesbian. Trust me..."
Jenna: "Day one and you're already backing out?!"
Me: (In my head "...yes"). "No. I just was stating my concerns."

I'm kinda a workout wuss.

Kara: "30 minutes on the elliptical."
Me: "30 minutes? That's too long."
Kara: "Get on the elliptical and do it!"
Me: "Yes ma'am."

And thus began our work out. She is the workout queen and has enough motivation for all 3 of us. I normally want to back out... but, she doesn't let me. She let's me and Jenna take rests... but, never give up completely. It's both rewarding and humorous.

We did insanity yesterday. Ha! what I wouldn't have given to have a small camera in the apartment to video tape us. She knew all the moves and me and Jenna struggled to learn them. Good times...

Later that night after we made our dinner, we wanted to go and actually do something. Someone suggested a place called air extreme sports... basically a big warehouse with foam pits, trampolines, rock walls (that you jump off of into a foam pit), rope swings (that you drop off of into a foam pit), basketball hoop games via trampoline and of course all things to make it as extreme as can be.

It was actually a lot of fun. It's more fun if you know tricks like most of the boys there did... I was happier watching them get enough air to do 8 front/back flips in a row and land in the foam pit than I was jumping. But, I had fun with them and we all left with the notion that sleep was going to come quite easily.

And it did.

My body is sore. And adjusting. So, six pack here I come. ;) Haaaa. Right.

October... Oh how I HaTe Halloween...

October is a wonderful month for fall, scenic drives and cute Fall clothes. It's also a month of midterms and the dreaded (probably only by me) tradition... Halloween.

Halloween brings about unneeded stress of picking out a costume.

I don't ever know what to be. Because I'm not creative and not innovative. especially where clothing and costumes are concerned..

Any ideas?

Luckily my mom sends me cute decorations or I would be even more out of luck! :)

This is a quick post and I have 2 pictures. I have 3 decorations... But, Jenna was sleeping when I left so I could turn on the light so you can see the third.

The third item is a cute wooden standup thing that says Boo! And it's straddles a bucket of chocolates me and Jenna bought for the room.

Here are the first 2:

Jealous? :) so cute! I love my mom.

Ps did anyone else watch the presidential debate? :)

October 6, 2010

It snowed today. Like legitimately snowed. As in I was walking across campus and it was snowing.

It didn't stick here but, the mountains are covered. Which makes me really excited to snowboard. And really unexcited (is that a real word) to be cold.

I don't have too much to say. I got a job. I love it. I love my job. How many people can say that? I really enjoy going to work that I don't really mind waking up at 6:30. And I don't mind making money either.

My schedule is as follows:
Monday:
  • Work 8-11
  • Living Prophets 11-12
  • Biology 12-1
  • Break/Lunch with Ana 1-2
  • Comparative Literature 2-3
  • Break 3-4
  • Communications 4-5:15.
  • Home/library/review... depends on the day.
Tuesday:
  • Work 8-11
  • Break 11-12
  • Work 12-2
  • Break 2-5
  • ASL 5-6:30
  • Home/library/review/study... again depends on the day.
Wednesday = Monday. Thursday= Tuesday.

Friday:
  • Work 8-12
  • Biology Lab 12-1
  • Break/Lunch 1-2
  • Comparative Literature 2-3
  • 3-end of day... anything.
I wake up early. I go to bed early. I don't hang out much. But, that is fine with me! As long as the days turn to weeks and the weeks to months. I am excited to hopefully apply/get into my major. I am excited to start taking more classes for my major. So.. this semester needs to be over. Cause I am so sick of generals.

252 days till it's a year.

617 till he's home.

But, who's counting. Gosh. I miss him.

You May Call Me,,,

Some call me Susan Boyle (because of my amazing singing), to others I'm Angelina Jolie (because of my obvious beauty) and to the rest of the world I'm Oprah (because I'm inexplicably wealthy, smart and good at everything I do).

BUT! To you, my avid readers, today you may call me Julia Child.

I'm guessing a few of you are staring at your computer in disbelief. This strange, little white girl from Charlotte, North Carolina could NEVER be compared to the Rachael Ray, Gordon Ramesey and much less Julia Child.

To those (few) skeptics I say... off with your head! Or... off with mine... as this post will probably embarrass me but, also allow me to take my place among the greats. For they too, were doubted by onlookers.

Today, I was hungry. I have little food. Mostly because I don't really know what to go to the grocery store to buy. So, I survive off sandwiches, pasta, cereal and other prepackaged delights. I was tired of all of that. My heart craved in n' out. But, my wallet put it's foot down and said "NO." So, I set off to take inventory.

I looked in my fridge. Most everything was getting close to empty. BUT! I had a dozen eggs. And what is better than eggs? Well, a lot. Anyway, I thought to myself... where's that "The Joy of Cooking" cookbook I have tucked away.

Luckily it was on my shelf of books. Tragically... cooking has never been a joy.

I found the section that said eggs. Now eggs for lunch was a foreign concept to me. Unless you cook them in top ramen. Which I have none of. It's too unhealthy. Right?

However, I stumbled across a recipe titled: Eggs in Poached Soup.

Poached soup? I read it wrong the first time. But, fortunately in a desire to discover what exactly poached soup was... I looked at the ingredients.

That's when everything changed. It called for eggs and tomato soup. Both ingredients I had. I was sold. Except for the poached part.

Eggs Poached in Soup:

"The following recipe makes a good, attractive, light meal - Prepared in a few minutes. Combine in a 8-inch skillet and heat to the boiling point over low heat:
  • 1 Can of tomato soup: 10 1/2 oz.
Diluted with:
  • 1/2 cup of water.
Add:

  • 1/2 tsp of dried basil
  • 1/4 tsp sugar
Reduce the heat and keep the liquid  below the boiling point. Add to the soup:
  • 4 eggs
Simmer 4 to 5 minutes or until the eggs firm up. Serve the eggs on...
  • rounds of toast
Covered with the soup. Sprinkle them with
  • chopped parsley
Easy enough right?

Well, I had the skillet already on the stove. I was heating it to start with my eggs. I was planning on scrambling them.. Well, I thought to myself... I'm pretty sure that's a skillet? I thought it was a frying pan, but I think they are about the same thing. So, I took out my trusty iphone and googled skillet. Sure enough what I had heating up on the stove was in fact a skillet.

I got my can opened. And I took out 2 eggs. I began pouring my soup onto the skillet. Well, the stove was on and the pan was hot (not medium heat) and the soup began to steam and burn and scream and all kinds of stuff. Freaking out, I abandoned the recipe. I quickly poured in my 1/2 cup of water, turned the stove off and moved my skillet to another burner.

I turned that burner to medium heat and began stirring frantically in an attempt to combine the soup and the water to one consistency. It worked! And then I remembered the sugar. I couldn't find any small measuring spoons... so I did a pinch. I figured in a recipe like this less is best. So, I didn't use a lot.

It suddenly dawned on me I had NO basil. Garlic salt is a good alternative right? I put a little dash of that... it quickly solidified.  So, then I spent the next couple of minutes trying to chop little pieces of it up and make it dissolve!

Once all the excitement was over and the soup was "one" and it was finally boiling, I cracked my egg. Well, not one for poached eggs and being an expert at adding eggs to ramen, I used the same principle. I left the soup slightly boiling and added my egg all while stirring to make sure that the yolk did not solidify and that the egg cooked (like it looks in egg drop soup). It worked. And I decided that one egg was in fact, enough. I put the other egg away. Took my soup off the stove. And poured it into a bowl.

I almost forgot the most traumatic part of the story. Haha the whole story is traumatic right? Well, burned nasty chunks that looked a little like chunks of blood... were tainting my soup. So, I spent time scooping those out. It was an experience. And I was on the verge of nausea the whole time.

Wallah. I was done.
My beautiful lunch. Water, salt, crackers and soup. My communications book is underneath my joy of cooking. Studious as always.

I was unable to remove all the chunks and was forced to eat around them.

The Recipe of life.

Soon to be my new favorite book.

My artsy picture. Cheese for some more taste. And also... to make it look more appetizing.
The soup seemed to be evaporating as it cooled off. A most peculiar thing... As every time I looked over at it (I was doing the dishes while my piping hot soup cooled off) it was getting lower in the bowl. I came up with 3 explanations:
  1. It was evaporating.
  2. The ancient Greek gods must've thought it looked appetizing and thought I was offering burnt sacrifice. (My comparative literature class must be getting to me).
  3. My hunger was causing me to hallucinate.
Anyway, it wasn't so bad. It wasn't delicious. But, it was good. It was college food. It was well worth the calories... maybe not.

But, it was lunch. And for the day... I AM JULIA CHILD! So, address me as such.

Dear Mom,

You were right. I need to learn to cook. And you are far superior than I. I also need to eat more meat. So maybe, I'll call you soon and we can work out a grocery list. You're the best.

Love,
Sophie

The only thing missing was my cooking partner... Nikole. Everything goes better and tastes better with her around!

That is all.

Sincerely,

Julia Child.

A Couple Things...

Tuesday evening Ana and I were able to go to the Temple and take part in some of the sacred ordinances there. It was such a much needed escape from the world. It was one of the most inspiring times that I have ever gone. The spirit was so strong and I just felt peace and at ease. It was like I was finally able to come to grips with where I was in my life.

I feel like my testimony is something that I don't share often enough. I didn't share it this past Sunday, but, I felt like maybe I should here. It is after all something that people I care very dearly about read and comment on.

Provo Temple. I took this last year.

I know that my Savior lives. I know that He loves me. I know that this world was created by a loving Heavenly Father. I know that his wisdom is infinite and that he knows me and each of us by name. I have a testimony of the Book of Mormon. That it too, is inspired scripture and the word of God. I know that the Bible is the word of God. And that together it and the Book of Mormon serve as a testimony and witness of our Savior, Jesus Christ.  I believe that God is the same today, tomorrow and forever and that he is unchanging. It is because of this belief that I know that he still cares about each of us and speaks to us today. I know that Joseph Smith was a Prophet of God and that he did see Christ and the Father. That this is the true Church on the Earth today and that it is designed after the church Christ set up while he was on this Earth. I know that President Monson is an inspired man of God, namely that he is a prophet, seer and a revelator and that he leads and guides this church under the direction of our Father in Heaven. I know that my Savior and my Heavenly Father know me by name. I know that I am a Child of God. And I know that that knowledge entitles me to commune with my Father in prayer. I know that my Heavenly Father hears and answers my prayers. I know that families are forever. I know that they are an eternal unit. I know that there is life after death and that our growth and progression continues on in the next life. I know that the leaders of this church are called of God. I know that there is a plan for me, and for each of us if we live righteously. I know that Christ died on the cross for our us. And that he atoned for each of our sins. I know that he was resurrected and was an example in all things. I know that He is always there and wants each of us to return to live with Him. I know who I am. I know God's plan. And I follow Him in faith. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

I know that often people confuse faith with blind obedience. I know that as the world changes and it's idea of right and wrong is redefined that the Gospel is constant. That the programs and policies may change but, that the doctrine never will.

I heard a quote in Sacrament meeting on Sunday that I loved.

"As long as we are living righteously, bad things will happen to us, but the wrong thing NEVER will." I am a firm believer in that. How true and inspiring that is.

I hope that I am always a proper example of what the church believes in. I hope that I can always be found as a witness of God, in all times, in all things and in all places. I am beyond thankful for my beliefs and my upbringing and the joy and meaning the gospel brings to my life.

For a beautiful talk on Grace watch the link below. (You may have to create a BYUTV account. It's free. After that, you can just type in the search bar "Brad Wilcox" it's his devotional given on 7/12/11. It is about 30 minutes. And really very interesting. For members and nonmembers alike.)
