Good Morning!

SO... These pictures were all taken this morning. I know it is now almost midnight and I am posting this instead of homework. But, I have wanted to blog all day. I have been thinking a lot about the little things that make life bearable. All too often we overlook the simple things. Like those extra five minutes of sleep before your alarm goes off or the way your bed feels after a long day of work.

Today was a good morning. I woke up. I was tired. I was running late. I got dressed in a hurry. Fixed my hair in a hurry. By the time I was out the door I was late. Late for my 8am job. Sounds pretty bad, right?

Wrong.

I called to let my boss know I was going to be 5-7 minutes late. The phone rings. Alex answers. My boss isn't there yet either. Score.

Late again. Great. There goes that $0.30 I was going to make. Except that as I clocked in I noticed something. I was warm. The office was actually warm. (Side note: it's always about 50 degrees in the office. Although it feels like 30.) So, I celebrated. With pictures, naturally.

Anyway, here's to mornings that go great in spite of the odds. Good mornings make for good days. And good days are what life is all about.

Right?

I know. I know. Not my "cutest outfit award" day. But, hey I was rushed.
We should all be happy I'm in clothes that match. Let alone the fact that
I am wearing a necklace. And a watch.

Happy Birthday Jen!!

One of my new favorite people is leaving.

Jen is leaving on her mission January 16, 2013. This semester is our last with her. And when we come back from the holidays she will be gone. As excited as I am for her to go onto this next great adventure; I am equally as upset at her for leaving us! Our apartment needs Jen. We need her love of all things BYU sports related, her ability to laugh at the ridiculousness that often takes place in our apartment, her desire to help out, that look she gives when you've said something just a little TOO ridiculous, just sitting and talking in our living room, her inevitable marriage to the star football player Cody Hoffman, and finally her love and kind heart she has brought and shared with each of us this semester.

Allow me to introduce the future Sister Jennifer Johnson (in her own words). [My commentary is in blue]

Name: Jennifer Johnson [Double J or J-squared. I wish I had thought of those nicknames earlier!!

27 And why should I ayield to sin, because of my flesh? Yea, why should I give way to btemptations, that the evil one have place in my heart to destroy my cpeace and afflict my soul? Why am I dangry because of mine enemy?
28 Awake, my soul! No longer adroop in sin. Rejoice, O my heart, and give place no more for the benemy of my soul.
29 Do not aanger again because of mine enemies. Do not slacken my strength because of mine afflictions.
30 Rejoice, O my aheart, and cry unto the Lord, and say: O Lord, I will praise thee forever; yea, my soul will rejoice in thee, my God, and the brock of my salvation.]

Favorite athlete: ;) Novak Djokovic [Not Brandon Davies?]
Favorite BYU sport to watch: Football . . . and basketball

Brief synopsis of why you want to serve/are serving: The gospel has given me so much happiness and has been the backbone of my entire life. I want to give others the chance to have that happiness and stability, and I feel like I owe the Lord so much and this is a way to serve Him.

And in the words of Apartment 112:

Kara: Jen is an amazing roommate! She is always willing to help out and is always so nice and fun to be around! Her personality makes her one of my favorite people to be with! She is so funny and always knows how to say just the right thing at the right time to crack anybody up! She may act tough, but I know she secretly has a soft side ;). I can see in the way she treats her friends and family how wonderful of a person she is! She cares about those around her, and I love just having conversations with her! I love her for her honesty and her ability to tell things how they are! She is real and I love that about her! There are so many favorite memories I have of Jen, but to name a few...first of all I love her facial expressions at people's absurd comments (not really a specific memory but still love the image)! I loved the time we started a movie late at night only to wake up realizing we had seen maybe only 5 minutes of the movie! I won't ever forget the time after the basketball game when Jen was driving us all home and a jerk of a man cut her off in the parking lot and she called him a "demon!" hahahaha Anytime spent with Jen is the best! I will miss her threats :) and especially when she yells because it doesn't happen hardly ever and just makes me smile! Jen is a wonderful friend that I love dearly and will miss a lot, but I know she will be a wonderful missionary!! I LOVE JEN!!!! :)
Genevieve:Jen is like an unexpected funny. Not in a bad way, in a refreshing way. You meet her and she is quiet but then you realize she has the absolute BEST sense of humor. Like I seriously never stop laughing when I'm with her and she doesn't do it to entertain others, she does it because she is just genuinely funny. She is just the best person...ever. Jen has become one of my closest friends. When she first moved in she was super quiet, but then I realized she is like an unexpected funny. Not in a bad way, in a refreshing way. You meet her and she is quiet but then you realize she has the absolute BEST sense of humor. Like I seriously never stop laughing when I'm with her and she doesn't do it to entertain others, she does it because she is just genuinely funny. She also has AMAZING taste is music. Seriously. And I'm obsessed with the way she dresses. Such good taste. I'm so glad that I could take last semester to get to know her because we have so much in common and she is one of the most fun people I've ever met. My favorite memories with Jen is watching duck dynasty with her, talking to her on our SLC trip and just being complete idiots and laughing with her in the apartment.  She is going to be the best missionary ever and Tennessee is so lucky to have her. Jen is one those people who come into your life and just make it better. She would bend over backwards to help you and is an overall awesome human. In conclusion she is just the best person...ever.
Jenna: JEN! I have been so happy that I have had the opportunity to meet and live with her! She is truly an amazing person! She is so FUNNY, and so fun to hang out with. I wish she wasn't leaving so we could get to know each other better. But the people of Tennessee I am sure really need her and her awesome personality and smile. :) I have decided She and I are like twins..our birthdays are only two days a part, she's going in the MTC on my birthday, our names (so similar), our loves (go Hawes!), practically everything!!! With the exceptions of hair and skin color! :) and I was being dead serious about how I want Jen, (Kate) and I should live together when we all get off our missions. I am going to miss her so much and I will most definitely miss her sense of humor! She really is the best and better not forget about me... or else. I love you Jen and I have LOVED being your roommate!
Kate: Jen is such a great friend!  I will always remember that sleepover that Jen, Meg, Lizzy, and I had together on Jen's trampoline.  We had a great chat and would-you-rather-session as we looked at the stars.  The best part was when we woke up and we were all practically in a big pile on top of each other.  What a great time!
I remember when Jen and Meg and I were pretty weird together in 7th grade.  We made a "pet" out of my book cover and a dying balloon and named it Casper or Callie or something.  Then we toted it around and pretended like it was a cat for a couple of days. One of my favorite memories happened a couple of summers ago.  We were out scootering and Jen was pretty good at it so she went off a little jump.  I wanted to do the same thing, but I was too scared to.  Jen encouraged me to do it by convincing me that there was no way I could fall.  She said, "You'd have to try to fall".  I went off the jump on my scooter, and somehow I fell pretty badly.  I think we all about died laughing and then we saw that I was bleeding on my leg so we sat on the curb and Meg got out her first aid kit to bandage me up.  And some "gangsters" walked past us as we sat there on the curb.
Sophia (Me): Jen, Jen, Jen. Jen, is one of my all time favorite roommates. She is funny, kind, sweet and easy to talk to. She is breaking my heart by going on a mission. I know a mission is a sacrifice for the missionary but, our apartment is taking a MAJOR one for the team by letting her go! Jen really is hilarious. And she is so much fun to be around and to joke with. I think one of my favorite memories of Jen is when Genevieve were acting extremely... weird (which we very rarely do) and she was sitting on the couch. She would alternate giving us looks of absolute confusion followed by a funny remark and then laughing with us hysterically. I think we ended up calling that segment the Sophia and Genevieve Show. But, it most definitely could have been more appropriately named 3 incredibly sexy girls acting a fool. OH, and definitely Temple Square. I think watching her jump about 20 times in order to get a picture was one of the funniest things ever. The only thing funnier was well.. is there anything funnier than trying to do a tiger jumping picture in Temple Square? Maybe, but also maybe not. Oh, and she makes the best facial expressions. I am not sure if she knows that she does it but, they are awesome. Even when directed at you. Gosh, Jen brought such a light and a fun loving spirit into Apartment 112. There really is nothing negative to say. She has a beautiful testimony and such a strong desire to serve. The people of Tennessee are going to be so very lucky. There are many people there that Jennifer Johnson is going to touch for good. I know that for a fact. She is capable of so much and bringing her light into the lives of others is something she does so effortlessly. I mean, apartment 112 would NOT be the same without her.

Sister Jennifer Johnson... WE WILL MISS YOU.

p.s Dear Jen,

I know I often refer to Tennessee as my "old stomping grounds" because it's on the East Coast and neighbors North Carolina. I can't recall ever actually spending any time IN Tennessee. Aside from driving through it. You'll love it though. As they will undoubtedly love you.

Love you always,

Sophia

It’s been awhile…

It’s been an awful long time since I’ve updated my blog. This happens to be both painfully normal and abnormally unsatisfying. Allow me to explain:
1)     Normal- I never update my blog. Ok, never is too harsh of a word. I have a hard time of consistently updating my blog. Or maybe, I frequently do not update my blog. Yea, basically I struggle.
2)      Painfully- I want to blog. I really do. I think about good posting ideas. And then I even write posts in my head as I walk home/across campus. I just never put them in writing. Blogging time is so elusive that way.
3)      Unsatisfying- I want to blog. And then to have all these thoughts and discussions locked up in my head, it’s very disruptive. I mean think of it from my perspective. You have all these things you are thinking about saying and then never get them out because you’re too busy with school, work and everything else that claims your time. In the words of Mika “The things we left unsaid, are only taking space up in our head.” And some days, my head is very full.
4)      Abnormally- should one really be worried about not blogging? I would think not. But, who am I to make such a general assumption for a large population of half-bloggers (a group to which I belong).
I have nothing too notable happening. Well, except that I am feeling a sort of blog-arthis. or a blog catharsis. (Side note: I just looked up catharsis to make sure it really was the word I wanted to use… and I found that one of the definitions was cleansing or purging of the bowels… Totally using that from here on out.) Well, the definition was an emotional release brought about by an intense emotional experience. And that isn’t exactly the definition my 7th Grade English teacher taught us when we read the best-selling novel, Into Thin Air by Jon Krakower.
I did not have an intense emotional experience, like previously mentioned, but I do feel like I just want to put some things down in writing.
First: One word…
SUMMER. A word not typically shrouded in uneasiness. In fact in my previous years it’s been nothing but excitement. No school. Going home. Ecuador. Summer jobs. Did I mention no school? Anyway, this year it’s a little more complicated. I just have a lot of things happening. And I need a schedule. Not really until January… but, I am just the planning type. I love spontaneity. But, I like to have my feet under me while I’m running. If that makes any sense at all. (Side note: I am not uneasy for the much anticipated arrival of William Daybell. In fact I am quite the opposite. I can’t wait. In that aspect Summer 2013 can’t come soon enough.)
CANCER. My mom is officially cancer free. Raise the rough. Shout for joy. Or jump for it. Party like a rockstar. And any other phrase/ditty that seems appropriate for the situation. But, really. Holy cow. What a ride? I could not be any happier. And I am hoping with all of me that it remains gone. Or at least far far away… and never comes back. (Lion King, anyone?)
PEOPLE. Allow me to introduce some new people to the blogging sphere. I will most definitely be mentioning them in future posts. Emma. Jen. Kate. Jeff. Mason. Joe. Good friends. I hope to keep them around for a while.
MISSIONS. Aside from the obvious reason I might mention this… everyone is going. Not just boys but girls. And I mean everyone. I have had more invites to mission farewells than I did all freshman year. And that’s impressive because I was in TWO different wards. So, I got a lot of farewell invites. Don’t get me wrong, missions are awesome. In fact, missions are admirable. And wonderful and those who choose to serve have my utmost respect. It’s just, everyone is going.
MARRIAGE. If you’re not going on a mission… you’re engaged. Or newly married. Or having a baby. Again the institution of marriage is a wonderful blessed thing. But, when you’re not going on a mission, with no boyfriend (at least in the country) and everyone else is…
Anyway, Thanksgiving is coming up. I have much to be thankful for. And I fear that this blog has sounded very petty, and annoying and ungrateful. But, I promise I am so thankful. So very very thankful.

Love...

I've been doing a lot of "self discovery" these past few months. I know I haven't posted in awhile and it's not that I haven't had anything to post. Because, I have been so very blessed. My father found a job. My mother had her cancer removed and has begun radiation. My brother, cousin and I are all moved into our new apartments (and it looks BEAUTIFUL might I add). My younger brother is loving college. And my youngest brother is doing well in school. That only barely skims the surface. I have much to be thankful for.

This, however, is a deeper personal reflection. And just like most everything else in my life lately, it has to do with Ecuador. I am sure everyone who lives close enough to hear my talk is sick of Ecuador. But, I am not. I miss what I had there. I miss those kids. I miss having purpose. I miss that unconditional love and the way a baby feels in your arms. I miss speaking spanish (however elementary my vocabulary was). I miss those two months more than I miss any other period of my life.

“You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.” -Steve Jobs

I am going to be a teacher. I love kids. I love teaching. I love that purpose that comes with waking up each morning and knowing that you might not be changing a life, but that you are impacting one.

President Monson has said about teaching:

"To you... who are administrators and teaches, you will stand before those who have struggled and saved and planned so that they might be your students. Treat them with dignity and provide them your very best. You not only teach a subject; you also mold human nature. You light the lamp of learning, that through your spirit,  your  faith,  and your love,  will bless generations yet to be born.  Your opportunities are NOT dissimilar to the Master Teacher, even Jesus Christ, the Son of God."

"Who is the teacher you remember from your youth? I would guess that in all probability it was the one who knew your name, who welcomed you to class, who was interested in you as a person, and who truly cared."

"The mark of a master teacher is indelible. It makes no difference whether or not he is teaching literature or mathematics or science or any other subject of the curriculum. He must win from his students faith that moves mountains. When he succeeds, near-mireacles happen. Suddenly a pupil is awakened to an enthusiastic interest in some aspect of learning and begins to read widely without being urged. Another discovers in himself powers that he did not know he had. Another decides to seek better companions. In a flash of inspiration, still another makes a decision that leads to a lifetime career."

After being in Ecuador I have a greater desire to serve and to help those that need it. I recognize how blessed I am and how ungratefully I have lived the past 20 years of my life. There are so many worldwide and even those in the United States that live so far below what I have always known as "normal." How ignorantly I lived until I saw.

I know it is not my call in life to live in Ecuador and take care of those kids forever, as much as I wish that it was. There is more that I will be led to achieve and I can only pray it is as noble of a cause as taking care of those precious and perfect children.

I hope that the remaining years I have at BYU I will be able to learn how to become the best teacher. I hope that through practice in the classroom I will one day be able to make an impact on student's lives. For it is so often that we forget our divine identity. We are not merely humans/people left to wander in confusion. I know I am a child of God. I know His hand is far more prevalent in my life than I ever had realized. And I know that there is no greater call than that of a teacher, mother, sister or friend.

As I sat in Sunday School on Sunday, I found myself doodling on the notebook I bring to church. By the time I was finished I had come up with my own "quote." It read:
"Every person, no matter their age, race, religion, education, nationality or  social status IS a Child of God. Treat them like it. And remember you are NO different."

Those children in Ecuador changed my life and my mindset. I know it probably sounds silly, but I owe so much of what I am becoming to their sweet smiles, kindness and unconditional love.

(I actually want to become fluent in Spanish and work at a Title II school. It's a new dream of mine. I love my brown babies. :)   ).

Hard to find...

People are plentiful.
Friends can be found just about anywhere.
Good friends are hard to come by.
Best friends are far and few between.

I feel like that's kind of a poem? Ha, I know it's not though.

Ignore the wall of sexy men behind us!

Getting close to try and fit Yosemite falls in the picture...

Don't mind me... Just chillin at the beach with my cabinet.

Thermal cam... guess neither of us are very "hot" (get it?)

Ignore the ever lengthing mullet... it has since been removed.

I love my cousin. :) <3
Best friends are just that. They're the best. Best friends should bring you up, make you want to be better. They are what's good for you and you hope that as you grow and progress they'll always be what's good for you. Sometimes, they aren't though.

I have always liked having a few close friends. And then plenty of other just good friends. And that's kinda what I have now.

A best friend is hard to come by. But, to come by as many as I have is rare. They all mean so much to me. I don't wanna do lists. Because people get hurt when you do lists. (I am missing a few pictures of some of my best friends on this blog... these are just ones that were taken recently).

They say a good friend picks you up when you fall down. A best friend laughs, says "walk much?!" and then helps you up.

A good friend bails you out of jail. A best friend is there in the cell with you saying "man that was fun."

A good friend is always nice. A best friend lets you have it when you deserve it.

A good friend loves you. A best friend loves you unconditionally.

A good friend is there for you. They ask how you're doing. A best friend knows how you're doing and is there without you asking.

I am beyond blessed with the people in my life. Especially at a time that has been emotionally hard for me... I have never felt as much love from the friends I have (near and far) as I have this school year.

To the good friends of this world... I salute you. To the best friends I congratulate you for you truly have found something wonderful.

"A best friend is a single soul dwelling in two bodies." (If that's the case... my soul is split into 5 bodies... 2 more and I'll have just as many best friends as Voldemort has horucruxes... nerd joke!)

I Work Out...

So, it's been two weeks since this whole "transformation" process began. For those of you who don't know... I am working out. I have a couple of goals. Hard goals to reach but, Kara and Jenna are right there with me! Anyway, this post is more just a facilitator for pictures:

So, this is our photo shoot before we went in...

Pinterest Saved Our Wall...

Pinterest has been known to save a lot of things...

Weddings, wardrobes, friendships, craft time, vacation spots... you name it Pinterest has saved it. Well, it's really come through again. Pinterest saved our wall.

Our "living" room is pretty awesome. We have it lined with movie posters and even one of Justin Bieber. Well, we rearranged our posters to make room for our NEWEST edition... the poster me, Kara and Nikki made.

It's pretty sweet. Basically... we bought 120 crayons. Then we organized them by color and shade. After which we hot glued them to a poster board... and then took our hair dryers and melted them. Thus creating the BEST piece of artwork I have ever been a part of! Take a look for yourself... but, let me just say it one last time: Thank you Pinterest for saving our wall!!

The crayons are glued...

The finished product!!

Kara and I deciding where to put this masterpiece!

Walah! (Keep your mouth shut... we know it's crooked but it's too late to fix!)
I also decided I am going to take JUMBO crayons... and hot glue them all the way around my first born's nursery. Instead of wall paper or patterns... they are going to have the most epic, crayon melted room EVER!

Let the Workout Begin...

Workout- Noun. A session of vigorous physical exercise.

I guess I should start by explaining what this post is all about. First of all I gained a little bit of weight last semester. Not that it would be really noticeable to anyone but myself. But, I figured it was better to lose the weight now instead of risk that I add more on top of that this semester. However, when I tell people all that I normally get a scene similar to Mean Girls... Regina George: "I really wanna lose 3 pounds..." (silence) (hurriedly) Gretchen Weiners: "Oh my gosh why you're so skinny!?"

Just kidding! I don't tell anyone the reason for me and my roommates starting weight watchers (our own little small group... it's free this way) and our own 30 day shred.

With a lot of help from my mom on the weight watchers side of things (she has all the materials), we've devised our plan of how many "points" we get per day. Then we sit down and make a schedule of what days we are eating what and how many points etc... and then we grocery shop. AND all 3 of us stick to it! I like to think that I spearhead the food side of things, but Kara helps a lot as well.

Kara, is our Jillian Michaels... she is the workout Queen. And let me tell you my abs are feelin' it today!

It went something like this...
Me: "Kara, I can't go here my shorts are too short."
Kara: "They don't care... girls are here with shorter shorts than you."
Me: "I can't go. I look like a lesbian in work out clothes."
Kara: "You DO NOT look like a lesbian. I think you could pull of a really cute sweatband/headband thing though... but you look too girly to be a lesbian. Trust me..."
Jenna: "Day one and you're already backing out?!"
Me: (In my head "...yes"). "No. I just was stating my concerns."

I'm kinda a workout wuss.

Kara: "30 minutes on the elliptical."
Me: "30 minutes? That's too long."
Kara: "Get on the elliptical and do it!"
Me: "Yes ma'am."

And thus began our work out. She is the workout queen and has enough motivation for all 3 of us. I normally want to back out... but, she doesn't let me. She let's me and Jenna take rests... but, never give up completely. It's both rewarding and humorous.

We did insanity yesterday. Ha! what I wouldn't have given to have a small camera in the apartment to video tape us. She knew all the moves and me and Jenna struggled to learn them. Good times...

Later that night after we made our dinner, we wanted to go and actually do something. Someone suggested a place called air extreme sports... basically a big warehouse with foam pits, trampolines, rock walls (that you jump off of into a foam pit), rope swings (that you drop off of into a foam pit), basketball hoop games via trampoline and of course all things to make it as extreme as can be.

It was actually a lot of fun. It's more fun if you know tricks like most of the boys there did... I was happier watching them get enough air to do 8 front/back flips in a row and land in the foam pit than I was jumping. But, I had fun with them and we all left with the notion that sleep was going to come quite easily.

And it did.

My body is sore. And adjusting. So, six pack here I come. ;) Haaaa. Right.

October 6, 2010

It snowed today. Like legitimately snowed. As in I was walking across campus and it was snowing.

It didn't stick here but, the mountains are covered. Which makes me really excited to snowboard. And really unexcited (is that a real word) to be cold.

I don't have too much to say. I got a job. I love it. I love my job. How many people can say that? I really enjoy going to work that I don't really mind waking up at 6:30. And I don't mind making money either.

My schedule is as follows:
Monday:
  • Work 8-11
  • Living Prophets 11-12
  • Biology 12-1
  • Break/Lunch with Ana 1-2
  • Comparative Literature 2-3
  • Break 3-4
  • Communications 4-5:15.
  • Home/library/review... depends on the day.
Tuesday:
  • Work 8-11
  • Break 11-12
  • Work 12-2
  • Break 2-5
  • ASL 5-6:30
  • Home/library/review/study... again depends on the day.
Wednesday = Monday. Thursday= Tuesday.

Friday:
  • Work 8-12
  • Biology Lab 12-1
  • Break/Lunch 1-2
  • Comparative Literature 2-3
  • 3-end of day... anything.
I wake up early. I go to bed early. I don't hang out much. But, that is fine with me! As long as the days turn to weeks and the weeks to months. I am excited to hopefully apply/get into my major. I am excited to start taking more classes for my major. So.. this semester needs to be over. Cause I am so sick of generals.

252 days till it's a year.

617 till he's home.

But, who's counting. Gosh. I miss him.

New Friends...

As of late new friends have become old friends and random strangers have become new friends. And old friends have become older friends? But, the best thing about all of that is that they are all friends. New, old and older. :) And I am lucky to have them!

Chase is an RA this year and so we kinda hang out at his dorm the most. Partly because he has cute, fun roommates and partly because it's in the middle of where we all live.

Just a couple of our new friends are:
  1. (she's old... but new to this area/group) Genevieve Gantt. Aka my cousin. And I love her to death. Goodness I could go off on how much I love that girl.
  2. Taylor Matherly: New to me... old to Jenna and Chase. He did summer sales with them.
  3. Austin Christensen: One of Chase's roommates.
  4. Kirk Bassett: One of Chase's roommates.
  5. Eric Anderson: Another RA. Over... Fugal hall.
  6. Tanner Preece: One of Chase's "residents"
  7. Greg Andrus: One of Chase's roommates. Hilarious.
  8. Any of Genevieve's wild friends she brings over with her.
All in all.. I think this is the first time I can say that there have been more guys in our group than girls. :)

Anyway, we had a fun weekend with that group... taking walks, going to the park, getting slurpies, going to a movie, going out to eat or just sitting around and talking. It's been fun though. Here are some park pictures... Only Eric and Austin are in them though.

For those of you with Facebook... all of them are up there.
Me and Ana. Allowing the boys to have "guy" time.

Chase... Hanging upside down?

Eric and Chase.

Again... us. ha

Chase on his Razor!

Chase and Austin... attempting to hang upside down by his feet.

Chase and Ana.

Eric, Me, Austin.

We can all see who has the most muscle here... clearly me. ;)
