Perspective...

I love definitions. I feel like Webster really just says it best. As I looked up the definition of perspective for this post, I came across various definition. However, the one that fits best is was...

Perspective: a true understanding of the relative importance of things.

Too often we are flying through life in a high speed chase, rushing from deadline to deadline that even the smallest road bumps irritate us more than they should.

For example, as I sat in the Doctor's office today my mom called me on the phone. As we sat there, just chatting away she began telling me how to talk to the Doctor. Immediately I was irritated. Did she not KNOW how old I was? I mean I'm 20. Surely if I can live across the country on my own, she doesn't think I am completely incompetent. I mean how hard is it to tell the Doctor your symptoms? In just a year and a half, I'll be a College Graduate. As my exasperation grew, she concluded her speech on what/how to talk to the Doctor. We concluded our conversation with me in a far worse mood than a sensible human being should have been in.

As I sat there and I put my phone down... I began to focus all my energy on my intelligence which had so effortlessly (and unintentionally) been insulted. As I began to think even harder on how "mature" I actually was (oh, the irony), my frustrations ensued.

And then... like a giant slap to my face, I stopped. As I sat there, and took a step back I became instantly grateful. My mom is wonderful, I know that. You know that. My blog is dripping with those words. My mom is wonderful. But, even more than that... I have a mom. If there is one thing we take for granted it's family. The children who changed my life so effortlessly in Ecuador this Summer have no parents. They have no mom to take them to the doctor, and will never have an experience similar to the one I had today.

My attitude became one of disappointment in the way I had handled the situation and grateful for the many blessings I take for granted on a daily basis.

Perspective: a true understanding of the relative importance of things.

My caring mother with my best interest in mind. My inner frustrations at being an independent, twenty-one year old adult who can handle things herself. The millions of children who go without every single day. One of these is not like the other.

Take the opportunity to step back. To check your perspective on even the simplest and smallest events in your life. Find what's important... and act on it.

Fresh Start!

So. First day of classes. And I have officially declared my major. I did some research today on different majors and what all I wanted to do and here's what I came up with... Communications Disorders.

What is that might you ask?!

degree in communication disorders can lead to a satisfying and rewarding career in health care, medicine, research, or education. Communication science and disorder degree programs prepare students to diagnose and treat a variety of hearing and speech disorders in children, the elderly, or patients who have suffered speech or hearing trauma. Students can anticipate careers as:
·         Speech pathologists
·         Audiologists
·         Special education teachers
·         Private school administrators
·         Counselors
·         Consultants
·         Speech and hearing therapists

I got that definition online. So don't quote me. Basically it satisfies all my job requirements! I get to work
with people, help kids, learn sign language and do some kind of service! Much less depressing than social
work, huh Mom?

Anyway, today was the first day of classes. I switched some around so now my schedule is just a tad different! Still 7 classes... Only 15 credit hours instead of my 14. Plus now I gotta go sell some books back fun stuff! Raise your hand if you're jealous. ;)

On a side note. Me and Jenna are taking world dance. We learned how to do the Komletro. It's a Norwegian  dance. Pretty simple but very fun to watch. We'll have to take a picture of us doing it. We look... silly. To say the very least. On a PLUS(er?)/more plus side, we met (before class. Luckily we got there early) and we bumped into Thomas (he sat with us at a basketball game once) and his friend Devin. We spent a good 20 min laughing and joking around. They are cute guys. Ha. I dunno where I'm going with that.

But, me and Jenna went to the gym. Who's shocked? My mom? Aeryn? Ha. Yep! We did. We had planned on going. I was iffy at the beginning of class. But that's where Thomas and Devin were headed so we met up with them after dance. We only worked out for 30 minutes but hey you gotta start somewhere?! It wasn't intense and the stair master or elliptical said i burned 100-some calories. And I learned how to do some full body lift thing? I dunno. Our plan is to go every Monday and Wednesday after dance!

It'll take some persuading but, hopefully I will begin WANTING to go! And will start to maybe... possibly enjoy it. Doubt it. :) But, it's worth a try.

Life Today.

I don't organize my thoughts very well. I don't really say what I want to say sometimes. I feel like a lot of it is just a big list of my day to day activity. But, maybe one day that will be of interest to me.

College. It's fun. Well... for the most part. The work can be overwhelming. But, my social life is slowly becoming non-existent. So, I have plenty of time for work.

I need to move dorms. I have 2 horrible roommates. I have an "eh" family home evening group. Our "sisters" are nice enough but, not interested in being like REAL friends. Our brothers... are a WHOLE different story. 3 are weird. 1 is a BIG black boy. 2 think they are hotter than they are. So, that was a bust.

I am ready for a new ward. New faces. New friends. Well, I have a few i'd like to keep in touch with. Jenna, Nikole and Ashley for starters. Then there's Lewis, Mitchell and Damon. And finally Ammon, Michael and Ashley.

I do enjoy their company for sure. It's not all what I expected. But, instead of moping around, I am trying to make the best of it. A different approach from previous posts.

I don't know what i'll do if I can't find a room to switch into. Probably change my name to Sam and my gender to male and secretly occupy one of the male dorm rooms. It's not my most well-thought-out plan. But it IS a work in progress.

I miss my family a lot. It's hard not seeing them. But I guess it's good practice for the future. When i'm married and living in my Mansion in the mountains on a lake in Colorado. (Boating in the summer. Boarding in the winter. Best of both worlds)

I like to dress cute. I feel weird wearing sweats to class. I've only done it twice so far. I felt like I would do it more but it's like my inner "Linda" is pushing through to my subconscious and driving me to wear my cute clothes EVERYDAY. Which I do. But, my good style hasn't helped make friends.

In fact, I was informed it's the smiley faces in my texts that make people like me. Sad life huh?

I'm getting to bed. School seems kind of pointless. I am getting the work done. I am studying. I just don't feel like i'm learning. I think I have pretty good grades, but I am VERY nervous for my first set of finals in like a week and a half. Wish me luck.

I leave the 18th. YES.

Another One of These Posts

I am not having as much fun as I had anticipated for my first year at BYU. I do not get along with two of my roommates. I do not have as many friends as I wanted. I do not enjoy being here all the time. I do not have enough time for everything. I am not getting enough sleep because I have so much reading for school and work for school and want to sometimes go out and have fun. I want things to get better but, I’m not sure that they will. I have been thinking about swapping rooms. But, what will that change. Maybe BYU wasn’t the place for me. Maybe another college would’ve suited me better. I’m not really sure. I am down a lot of the time. I want things to change. I just don’t know. Really and truly, I want what I don’t have. However, I do have the gospel. I do have family and friends. I am at a college where I am making (for the most part) really good grades. I do have two roommates I get along with pretty much all of the time and one roommate I get along with most of the time. I imagined things different but, things aren’t always what you imagined them to be like. That’s been the hardest part so far. That and this roller coaster of emotions that college has brought. I feel like I am at home in my little dorm room. But, it’s not always a happy home. It’s not always where I want to be. I’m complaining again. I have something many people don’t. I have the gospel. It's Sunday. That must be why I am bringing the Gospel up so much. Shouldn’t it make me happy? I’m sure I’m not utilizing it to the best of its ability. Maybe I’m addressing the wrong issues in my life. There is more I can be doing today that will make for a better tomorrow. Times have been worse for people. My experience can get better. It will get better. It won’t always be like this. Things can change. That’s the beauty of life I guess. Things are only bad for a moment in time. Others have it worse than I do. I want to be happy. I want to have more fun. I want, I want, I want.
