Initial Reactions... Quito, Ecuador

After 3 flights... (Salt Lake to Dallas, Dallas to Miami and Miami to Quito) and free dinner on the plane (it was actually really good?) I made it to Quito, Ecuador. This will be my home for the next two months and I can't wait! :) I am so excited to start working with the kids.

Quito is a city in Ecuador. It's actually the Capital of Ecuador. But, I am definitely in South America.

It's really late here (1am) and I have a busy day of orientation tomorrow. :) I can't wait! Ah! I am so excited. But, here are some pictures and yes... some initial reactions.

  1. Everything, all signs, songs, pictures, posters, everything is in Spanish.
  2. I wish I knew Spanish.
  3. It's not a very clean city.
  4. It reminds me of like... Little Korea in LA but, not nearly as nice. Or as well lit.
  5. The house is huge. We have security. And a passcode to even get in. I feel cool. And special.
  6. I have heard nothing but good about the kids and am SO excited to start!!
  7. The girls are all very nice. My new roommate is Brandi. :) But, all the girls are awesome!
  8. I've never been to South America before but I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to go out of the US before this!
  9. I got to ride in a taxi! And listen to Enrique serenade us through the radio.
  10. I'm going to really enjoy it here. In fact... I'm going to love it!
And... of course... pictures. :) of me. Not the city. haha

Sitting on my bed in Quito! :)

Lovin' every minute of it. ;)

My welcome goodies and note from my new roommate!

My clothes.
Yes, they do have a closet to hang things. I am sure my mom is mildly horrified by the sight of my clothes rack. :)

Things About Me...

My mom sent me an email the other day asking for a few things that people don't know about her... I thought she was asking for personal things. My first thought was she wanted to see how well I knew her. Ha. My second thought was that one of the boys said she did something, that she doesn't actually do... and she wanted to see if what they said made the list.

I was wrong on all accounts. It was for a Relief Society Spotlight activity. Whoops. So, she was unable to use any of mine.

Instead of posting the things I said about her... or the actual list she turned in... I figured I would post a few things maybe you do (or don't) know about me... here goes:

  1. The boy/man/guy (I never know what to call him) that I am absolutely head over heels for is serving a mission in Mendoza, Argentina.
  2. I prefer Sophia over Sophie.
  3. My parents are quite literally the BEST parents in the WHOLE entire world.
  4. I have 3 wonderful brothers who light up my day! (Especially random texts from Hayden and Blake... and seeing Chase).
  5. I like to use the phrase "my boyfriend is overseas" as an excuse to see the reaction of those around me, bug my roommates. I say it loud and in public places. So, now they say it back to me. For example: "No Jenna, you know I can't go to the movies this Saturday night... you know my boyfriend is overseas."
  6. After/while it's snowing... I like to walk through the snow just to see my footprints.
  7. I have 3 half rings that I wear. I love them!
  8. I wear two CTR rings. I guess so I never forget? Or just out of habit.
  9. Despite popular belief my social life hasn't been too crazy this semester or last semester... in fact the average bed time in our apartment is around... 12am/Midnight.
  10. I love reading but, haven't read an actual book for fun since last summer.
  11. My mom once said... people spend their money in different ways (after commenting on how could so and so afford to fly to somewhere when they had so many kids... why wouldn't they spend that on their not so nice house?!) I decided I want a nice house (doesn't have to be super big) but, it has to be super clean, well decorated and a good, wholesome, fun place to be. But, that I want to spend my money on plane tickets, hotel rooms and food. Because I want my family to travel the world
  12. I really hate that I bite my nails. Even if I act like it doesn't bug me.
  13. I am incredibly self conscious about gaining weight in my stomach... pregnancy should be fun.
  14. I can't leave the house without earrings, a watch and a belt.
  15. I love beanies. I miss my long hair when I see people with straight hair. But, I do like my short hair.
  16. I would rather be hot than cold. But, my hands (when in Utah) are ALWAYS cold. It's weird. Even as I type... they are freezing. Must be poor circulation or something.
  17. My favorite colors have changed from what they were when I was little. I now really like purple. And orange. (I still like blue and green though).
  18. I can touch and move back and forth my uvula (punching bag in the back of your throat) with my tongue... without choking. Admit it... you just tried to do that!
  19.  I am still outgoing. But, when I come to a group of people that already know each other (like... getting a new job) I am more shy than usual.
  20. I can't cut a straight line with scissors.
  21. If I am cooking/making a poster/any sort of activity, I can't ever go without spilling something on me, covering my hands, finding residue in random places on me later or getting something on my face.
  22. I can play the piano. But, I can't sing. Or dance. I have no ability to make my movements fluid. Or to a beat.
  23. I am going to be an elementary school teacher! I want to teach k-3 but, my license will go from k-6.
  24. Aside from going to Ecuador this summer... I will also be spending the second half of my summer in NC lifeguarding and hanging with my family.
  25. I had to make it an even 25 for OCD reasons... That counts as one right?
That's not everything about me... or even everything UNIQUE about me. But, I tried to come up with the obscure. Stuff you wouldn't just know. :)

End With a Random Bang...

Goodbye January 2012... and good riddance.

Well, not exactly good riddance. This month has been a pretty good one actually. It's had its ups and downs but, overall I've liked it. I guess the good riddance is more or less a "goodbye January... wish you were January 2013 but, beggars can't be choosers.." kinda good riddance.

Life is good, ya know? I have friends here in Utah, back in NC and now scattered across the world that mean the world to me. I have family here in Utah, back in NC and scattered across the country who are far too good to me. And, I have an amazing guy serving the Lord in Argentina. I'd like to say he's all mine but, well... on a mission it's kinda 75-25% with the 75 belonging to the man upstairs. And it's probably more than 75%.

I have a job. I have a car. I have an iPhone. I have thousands of dollars in clothing, jewelry and other merchandise that I am so very thankful for.

In conclusion... I am blessed. January has been good to me. I'm 20! Weird? Yes.

Can you believe it... I am no longer in that "don't call me a teen but, I'm not yet an "adult" " kind of phase. I can now proudly announce my age in a room full of college kids without feeling like a baby. I am now starting to realize that I am getting older. It's kind of a weird "coming of age" kind of knowledge. Like... I know that it's all uphill from here. I'm only getting older. I mean back in the day who cares if you are 13 or 14... no one. You're still young. But, once you hit 20.. next thing you know you're 26 and saying "wow I'm getting old..." then it's 33 "and you think... I'm not really 30 flirty and thriving (13 going on 30 shout out)...I'm getting older." And then you have kids and they are out of the house and the next thing you know you have grandkids and you're retired.

So, what we've learned is that from here on out I am officially to use the phrase "man, I'm getting old." And I also can complain about my back hurting, my brain not working like it used to, I can say mean, judgmental things and people will justify it by saying "she's just getting old", I am now entitled to use the phrase "back in my day", and will probably get some reading glasses (if only for show) by the end of this school year.

I got my tape player yesterday. It finally came in the mail. And by finally came I mean... I got my money back from the mean Chinese people who never sent my first one and bought it from a new company. Sure it was more expensive... but it also came the next day. NOW there is something to complain about... eBay. Who has actually had a lifetime of pleasant experiences when buying things off eBay. No one that's who. It's such an amazing site full of steals and deals... and also full of literal steals and scams.

But, overall this has been a January for the books. I started my first ever diet. I kinda hate every second of it some days. When I want to eat every cake, cookie, and peanut (Nan ALWAYS has a tempting bowl of peanuts in our office) in sight. And that's a big deal cause I don't even like sweets. More often than not I am craving a juicy burger and some salty fries. And a bag of Lays potato chips. And normal food with no exercise. And I'd like to just sit and pig out. And lose weight and build muscle all by doing nothing. Aha! I am indeed an American.

But, I love feeling active. I hate the activity some days. But, it's good for me to work out. I have my goals. Will I reach them in the next year? Haha keep your fingers crossed, pick me a 4 leaf clover, cut off that rabbit's foot and for the LOVE would someone please develop a recipe for delicious low fat/cal/carb french fries (preferably the ones that taste like McDonalds.)

This is random. But, this is what's going on in my life as of January 30, 2012. Again...  sitting here wishing it was 2013. BUT, whatever. Right? You can't always get what you want. And my morning mantra has become "Anything GREAT is always worth the WAIT." Kinda dumb. But, it applies to most everything. Right? Right.

Anyway, to those of you reading this and to me who is typing it... do something nice for someone today. Write a note. Make a bed. Clean a kitchen. Give a compliment. Smile at a stranger. Buy your roommate a cute owl shirt... (cough cough Jenna and Kara... see picture below)

(Don't hate on the hair. It looks WAY better in person. Trust me. It was a GOOD hair day today.)

It's never a bad time to be nice to someone else.

Peace N' blessins.

And say goodbye and good riddance (in a good way) to January 2012.

Movies That I Love.

Not just movies that I love... older movies that I love. There really are only a few. Maybe that's because I'm not remembering them all... I don't know. But, the top few that I can remember are:

  • Anne of Green Gables
  • Pride and Prejudice (The 6 hour one)
  • My Fair Lady

The Worst Thing...

The worst part about being a girl... is well being a girl.

You're moody and you over think and analyze things. Which is super lame cause you read/hear/think one little thing and BAM! There goes your whole day. Your whole mood... and you get stuck on that one thing for the rest of the day. Or week. And you never know what was actually meant or how it all even started because you've taken it down this path with no return. Whether its a text, email or phone conversation... consider it over analyzed. Because you're a girl. Boo.

You think every thing in your life should be like a movie. Or maybe that's just me and my subconscious desire to be on the "big screen." Like today... as I walked across campus I had this elaborate "Daydream" if you will about how I was a secret agent... but like I was a secret agent IN A MOVIE. So, I planned out my moves and my outfit changes and camera angles all in my head. As I walked across campus in the freezing cold air.

You see couples and you think of "him." You all have had a "him." I don't care who you are. Whether he broke your heart, you broke his, you've never actually spoken to him, you're hopelessly in love or just have a crush on him... he's there. And he's not just there in one couple. He's there in EVERY SINGLE couple. Quit holding hands on campus... you're so cute I could vomit. Too much? Probably.

You listen to songs... and this is probably true for both genders... that bring back memories. And you listen to them on repeat. And you sing your heart out. And then you don't feel any better or you feel tons better. Normally it's the first and you just sit and over analyze and sing, or cry, or laugh, or smile, or think, or just sing because you're a girl.

Drama follows you everywhere. It's true. And I hate drama. But, every group has that one person who kinda feeds or loves drama... and it's typically a girl. And you think you may have escaped that person... or that phase in your life... but you would be wrong. Drama. Yuck.

You miss home. Boys do too. But, girls love their moms. And it's harder for them. Because if you're a girl... what girl knows YOU better than any other girl. Chances are it's your mom. Just admit it. I miss home.

You love school, and weekends, and hanging out and you want time to sit and linger, but you also just want time to speed up and for it to be the exact day and time you want when you want. And you know what... you can't. Time moves when and how it wants. And that's that. So sit down girl, shut up and enjoy the ride.

You can't just sit down, shut up and enjoy the ride... because guess what you're a girl. And if everyone isn't enjoying the ride then chances are you aren't either. Cause you want everyone to be having fun and doing well. Your happiness doesn't depend on others, cause you know you get to choose to be happy (or happiness is a choice/state of mind/being) but, it's just not as much fun if EVERYONE isn't having fun.

You have to do your hair. And make up. And dress cute. Why? Because Vogue, Glamour and People magazine says you have to. Otherwise you get categorized in the "what NOT to look like section." And you know what... I was tired this morning. So, I decided to stick it to the man. I threw on my bedazzled/rhinestone jeans, a long sleeve t-shirt and a hoodie. And my hair was pulled into a pony tail. And guess what. I still looked cute. Dang it.

Being a girl... is NOT the worst thing in the world... all the time. ;) Kidding. A more positive one later. Just needed to vent!

What I DO Want in a Career vs. What I DON'T Want.

'I am often told I have a good head on my shoulders. That I an capable of many things. Well, why has been choosing a major been a major struggle/hurdle. An obstacle I am struggling to overcome. I am not one of those people who enjoy changing majors like 100 times. I don't do it for fun. I just can't ever feel good about any one thing. And I don't want to get a degree in something I can't or won't use. So, here are my two lists. We will start with what I DON'T want.

I don't want to:
• work 40+ hours a week
• work in a cubicle/desk job
• be gone for work a lot
• go one business trips for long periods of time.
• work an "on call" all hours of the day/night kinda job.
• feel like my job is my life.
• ALWAYS be working. (late hours at home, on vacations that kinda thing)
• be stuck and never be promoted. Or demoted for that matter. Though promoted is definitely preferred.
• be out of a job.
• struggle financially
• be the sole provider of my family.
• not have kids when I want because of my work.
• be in school 5+ years.
• get a random degree and an even more random job.
• work with corrupt people or in a corrupt industry.
• work where I am always on the defensive... Where I feel like my integrity and values are constantly challenged.
• work in politics.
• work and have kids.
• to always feel pushed for deadlines/stressed.
• be away from my husband for long periods of time.
• work stuck behind a computer.
• be a face in the crowd.
• not be motivated or feel supported
• to be limited on time I have to spend with my family, church, church callings and my community.
• to work somewhere that has low expectations for employees.

Now... On to what I DO want.

I want to:
• Make a difference
• work with kids.
• be able to afford nice things.
• be able to go on vacation.
• know I am doing something good and worthwhile.
• have opportunity to be an example.
• come home for dinner every night. I'd like to be the one fixing or helping to fix it too.
• have some free time.
• be good at what I do.
• do something that CAN be fun.
• graduate in 4 years.
• to travel (not necessarily for my job)
• my co-workers to know my husband.
• to get married.
• be in shape... Same size I am now would be nice.
• to feel needed/appreciated/vital
• have time for myself
• eventually be a stay at home mom
• have creativity in the workplace (not routine day in day out as well as I what I do/create/say)
• work with people.
• work FOR people. (people as a collective whole. Not like under a boss or for a boss. Though I am not above working for a boss).
• feel myself being challenged and growing.
• have time to enjoy the little things.
• find a job where I can live my values and beliefs.
• feel uplifted at my job.
• want to wake up and go to work.
• work with kids. Have some interaction. Or help them.
• KNOW that what I'm doing is right.

Now... On to choose a major. Thats the hard part. :/

Wish me luck.

Without You...

I know to most of you who read the title immediately thought... "Oh great. Another post about that boy on a mission." And to you I say, you're rude.

To everyone else... the post is actually about YOU. Yes, seeing as the majority of my friends and family I am around all the time, up here in Provo Utah, don't read my blog... this post is about you.

The title is partly an attempt at me getting creative and thought provoking and partly as a result of today's "pop" music. I have a couple songs I listen to on repeat several times in a row. Both of them share the same name. "Without You."

Links are posted below. The first link I think most people will like... it's not one of those songs that just us youngsters listen to. It's one that the lyrics speak to anyone who has ever had any form of love in their life. I pity those who shy away from love. "It is better to have loved and lost, than to never love at all.":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3TWpWf798s&ob=av2e

The second... well, it's pop. And it makes you wanna go clubbing, dance around your apartment and belt out the meaningless lyrics at the top of your lungs.. or a weird combination of the 3. And among all the hip shaking and weird looks from people who just DON'T know what real talent is... you find that maybe you can relate to these meaningless lyrics. And that's the beauty of music isn't it? That you can relate to something that has no meaning... or all the meaning in the world...simply from the lyrics and the way the music makes you feel. Without any further ado:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUe8uoKdHao&ob=av2e

Anyway, this post and the next one are referring to how I am without all of you.

So... enjoy looking/reading about my weekend. And pretend you were there. Because I missed all of you. Especially YOU.

Another Sunday :)

I got to skype with Ana. Which was much needed.

This is kinda recap. As well as a combination of pictures. Combined with a couple thoughts. So, take a trip down my lane. :)

As I sit here and listen to basically my all time favorite band Holiday Parade, I just am thinking. Actually I read my friends blog. His name is Damon. I met him out at BYU. He was attending UVU and then transferred to BYU-I for spring. His most recent post was titled "Time Travels." To be read as a sentence. He made some interesting points and here are a few:

  • "Time is fun to think about. Time is one of those completely finite things in this life and it's always fleeting and doing exactly the opposite of what we want. If we want time to hurry up, it slowly ticks. If we want to stop time, we might as well just close our eyes and be in the future right away. We all have the same 24 hours to use daily, but it seems like everyone's time goes at a different speed."
  • "Also, time is so real and constantly burning. Somehow, it's completely imaginary. Without the invention of calendars and clocks, time would only be evident in aging. Time could be sped up and slowed down as we please, but the world probably wouldn't let us."
  • "I can use this time in different ways. I can either let this time psych me up or psych me out."
I know you didn't come to my blog to read his... but, he writes the things I think. He finds words for the things I try to. It's kinda weird. I love reading his blog. It is called Deep Thoughts and Cheap Shots... and he writes each blog and finishes with a deep thought and a cheap shot. It's serious mixed with funny. You go Damon. :)

Anyway, weird how time moves isn't it? One minute you are 13 years old in Middle School, time is irrelevant and you spend your days thinking about how you can't bear to have your best friends go to different high schools. "Oh the travesty!" And in a blink you're almost 20. Finished a year of college and trying to figure out your place in this world.

Time is an interesting concept. It moves so slow in the moment. I often find this concept at work. I will check the clock... 2:15pm, serve some customers/save some lives look again 2:27pm. And I'll think to myself "I can NOT wait till this pool/ice cream place is closed." 9-10pm rolls around and I'm confused as to where my shift went. I do enjoy working. I love it. I love having something to do. I love having good friends to work with. I went out with a couple from the pool on Saturday. They are younger than me but, hey it's an invite to somewhere other than my playroom couch.

"She Came Around" by Holiday Parade is on repeat at the moment. Gosh, this band is so good. I love songs about love. But, it seems that the majority of AMAZING love songs are written by men. Come on ladies, step it up.

I'm old. Not like OLD old. But, old for me. Time can slow down. But, could it really speed up? I have so many questions. And a glimpse into my future would be much appreciated. But, I guess a future is built upon the things in the present.

I just don't know what I need to be when I grow up. I say need to be. Because what I want to be... is being paid for being me. Like Oprah or Bill Gates. But, even they were something before they were taking showers in cash. And money really isn't important to me. I don't have to be wealthy, really. I just have to be stable. I have to have enough to make ends meet. And then enough to help others and buy something nice for me, my husband or my kids from time to time.

Life is crazy. But, it's only a blip compared to everything else. I wish I could talk in depth with some of my good friends. But, religion is too big a part of my life. And it clashes. I want to talk about what I believe. Scream it on the rooftops sometimes. I want others to know. I want you to come to me with questions, not to the internet.

Time is wild. Time is crazy. Time is unstoppable. Yet we live, breathe and move in time. We do what we need to do based on what a clock says. We show up, leave and do because of time. Time is always ticking. And that's scary to me. Because sometimes I want to just sit in Limbo. And take it all in. Take time to register. Anyway, that's all for now. I have 2 other blogs to publish tonight.

Just Wanted to Post

I haven't blogged much. I don't have much to say. I have 2 posts I am working on. Hopefully those will be out soon. I don't do much. I work a lot. This week has been hard. I need Jenna, Ana and Nikole. I have talked to each of them on the phone this week. And I miss them. I wish I could post more where friends are concerned. But, not today. I'm not emotionally ready for all of that.

A new post soon. I promise.

Change.

I changed the color for my blog. And the font. I have a lot to think about. And a lot to mull over. I talked to Sandie Lanier's niece about being an "army wife." It was eye opening. And I need some time to process and really think. But, I have awhile so no decisions need to be made. I have a new outlook that I am just preparing for the future... but, it's by no means planned out. I kinda have the attitude of "I'll go where you want me to go." For now. Which has always been my attitude. But, now with a lot less complaining.

Anyway. Purple is kinda my color. And I figured the blog needed to be renovated a little. :)

In the words of Smash Mouth " Somebody once asked could I spare some change for gas...I need to get myself away from this place! I said yep what a concept,I could use a little fuel myself...And we could all use a little CHANGE."

Anxiety...And a Catharsis of Sorts.

I am ready for Will to leave. Not because I want him to be gone and not because I'm tired of him. But, I am tired of anticipating the day when my days of "normalcy" will ultimately come to a screeching halt. I can't really focus on much else other than... I can't even TALK to him come Sunday. He gets set apart the 12th and reports to the MTC on the 15th. What?

Just yesterday it was January. And Jenna and I were at some silly stake dance. There we spotted Luke and his roommates. Really knowing very few other people from our new ward we went up and introduced ourselves to the four (we already knew Luke) of them. I thought Will seemed nice. Quiet and very soldiery (which is weird cause I later found out he was in ROTC... it was just the way he carried himself?), but nice.

Today, we've been dating for a little more or less than 5 months. Weird that we don't exactly have an anniversary? It was more of like a series of days than just ONE day. That's OK. It makes us different.

I am going to write down the weird chain in which I know Will, so that one day later on I will realize how blessed I was to have some of the experiences I had both semesters. And to realize how much the Lord's hand really is in our lives. Even if it's only to look back with fond memories of my freshman year (I hope it is more than that... ) I want to be able to remember just how intricate us meeting was.

I'll start at the beginning. Room selection day:
  1. If only I had listened to my Aunt Brenda and roomed in her old hall (Whitney) I would've met Will first semester. But, I didn't. I for some reason decided on Harris... mainly because it was SUPER close to campus.
  2. I added Nikole Clayton on facebook as a friend. And as the day closed and I had 4 other roommates I quickly logged on and tried to stalk them on facebook as well.
  3. I kept getting a room swap request from some girl in Gates Hall. I never took it because, well I had "met" Nikole and really liked her and she didn't know who the girl was... so, I never took it.
  4. Thus, I ended up in 60 Harris Hall.
Move-in Day:
  1. Basically the most important piece to the puzzle here is that I met Nikole and Jenna.
  2. Also, a big piece is that Jenna was my roommate. And that she was from Indiana. And that she had very few youth in her ward and spent a lot of time 4 hours south... in her cousins ward... which also happened to be Luke's ward.
Over the course of Fall semester Nikole, Ashley, Jenna and I bonded. However, we had a little bit of a clash with our other 2 roommates and eventually decided that it would be best (for all 6 of us), if we moved out. Ashley had found a spot in Fox Hall, Nikole was moving back home and me and Jenna were on the hunt. Ideally we wanted to stay together.

Room swapping:
  1. I tried everywhere. Girls just weren't wanting to switch! Many had just never changed their swap preference from room selection day. Basically... a bunch of dead ends.
  2. I talked to a lot of girls who knew people who were moving. I tried with them, but really I just kept getting shut down!
  3. Finally, I logged on in a desperate attempt clicked on a bed in 232 Whitney Hall that happened to be orange. (Looking to swap). I came back later that day to find that she had accepted. I Travis, Josh and Jourden who were in that ward and immediately texted Travis to find out who the girl was and was her roommate trying to swap as well.
  4. As fate would have it these two girls wanted out as well. So, after much talking and asking (some other girl had taken Jenna's spot in the room before she could... so I sent an email to her) me and Jenna were BOTH settled in Whitney Hall.
Jenna and Luke:
  1. Luckily Jenna knew Luke from back home... So, once we found Luke at the dance we started hanging out with them more often.
  2. We even scoured both of our phones for 3 "cute, single girls" to come hang out with us so that there wouldn't be a 5-2 boy to girl ratio one night.
  3. One night when I was looking for something to do... I invited myself over  to their apartment and me and Will, Ben, Luke and Skyler went to Panda. We basically swapped awkward date stories, funny first semester stories, what girls/boys like on a first date and how to tell if someone is interested. That night Will asked me out on a date. He says I wasn't dropping any hints that I wanted him to and therefore was clearly being bold. But, he obviously wasn't picking up any of the hints I dropped to say the very least. :)
Just weird how it all works out huh? Basically the wrong hall but the right roommate. And then the right roommate with the right friend. And then the right friend with the awesome Will roommate. Just a weird chain. Something I want to remember.

I am ready for him to go on his mission. At one of my weaker moments yesterday my mom sent me a very insightful text. It basically said that I did deep down and at the surface want him to go on his mission. That it would be hard. But, that I wanted a man who had served a worthy mission. And this was his chance to become that kind of man.

I am ready for him to leave because I am ready for him to come home. I am ready for the future. I am kinda happy about getting mail. But, more importantly I am happy for him to grow into the man I know the Lord wants him to be. I am ready for my own growth. Both, emotionally and spiritually. I know William will make an amazing missionary. And I know he will do extraordinary things and that his example and words will be both sincere and inspiring.

I am ready to see what the future holds. I know what I want. I know what he wants. And, if my future husband reads this and it's not William, don't be angry. I love this guy. I will always have a spot for William Daybell in my heart. And as much as I am going to date around these next 2 years. And as much as I am going to work on getting myself more like the person I want to be. And as cliche and teenagery as this sounds... the next 2 years (unless he changes his mind), my heart will be in Argentina. And it's not going to be easy to ever steal it away.

We had it right back in elementary school. We laugh and joke at how serious our younger siblings, children or friends are. About how dramatic and "lovesick" they act. But, they get it. They understand what we don't. It's OK to say things like, "I'm going to marry him," "Future Mrs. (insert last name)", "I love him so much, you just don't know," "he is my whole world," etc... How often I find myself thinking the same things a 3rd grader or a 9th grader would about their boyfriend.

I love William Daybell in the simplest of ways. Yet, somehow I love him in the deepest. He is wonderful, he is cute, he is smart, he is funny, he is quiet, he is a soldier, he is sweet and kind, he is a leader, he is a missionary and he is, for the moment, mine.

More to come later. That I can promise. Now, I need to put down the cheez-its and call the kid. I won't be able to in 4 days. UGH. Goodnight.

In My Head...

In my Student Development class, we are watching/reading Tuesdays With Morrie. I don't know who all has read that book but, it is quite good. As we watch the movie, however, it really makes you think. The book is good for mulling over ideas and thoughts. But, the movie really brings it home.

I have been thinking a lot about death lately. I have met a couple of people this semester who all look(ed) at death differently than I do. And I think that's special. Or necessary better yet. I think our difference in ideas and perception is what makes us friends. We don't think the same, feel the same or react the same but we are all children of God and therefore we all have something in common.

Death is weird. It is permanent. It is unavoidable. And it is scary. We fear death almost as much as we fear living. I think back on my life so far and I am content. I am for the most part proud or accepting of the decisions I've made. In the book/movie the character Morrie (who has lived a long life and is now slowly dying) says "You have to learn to die, to learn how to live."

Sadly, my life is far from a movie. I yearn for experiences like Mitch Albom had. To talk with such inspiring people that you make a change in the way you live. And then I think. As a member of this church, we are blessed with such experiences. We have such individuals who speak to us two times a year. Who take the time to teach us life lessons. I will be honest. I am not always the best listener. I am not always the best applier. But, I want to change. I think a lot lately about who I am becoming. The standards I have and the way in which I uphold them. Like everyone, I have moments of disappointment and moments where I have to pat myself on the back.

I am different than the 30,000 students around me. I am not the same as them. My grades are not like theirs. My family is not like theirs. My background, future and present is not anything like theirs. But, I am living my life in a way that is similar to theirs.

There is something unique about college students who won't drink. Who won't have pre-marital sex. Who won't go do drugs, watch porn, swear or cheat. They are unique. They are different. And yet, we are the same. I am not one to say that the people here at BYU all comply to every single rule. But, I can proudly say that the people I hang out with aren't like other college students. We don't spend our time doing things we won't remember the next day. Instead we do activities that create a bond between us. That make us closer. And we take clear pictures that aren't filled with little red cups, or bloodshot eyes, that are filled with smiles, crazy boys and weird poses. And then without fear of getting in trouble with parents or the law we post them online. And we remember.

And then the boys leave. They go on to serve the Lord. They dedicate two years of their life to our church. To what they believe. Whether or not they believe 10% or 100% they are there because they know. And the girls in the crazy freshman college pictures with them... support them. And for reasons that go beyond a blurred picture, a fuzzy memory or a foggy recollection of Friday nights they are proud. Because, they know that they played a part, how ever small, to get them where they need to be.

And then, for the girls, it all starts over. The girls start their second year of college. And are challenged to find the same types of good friends they found before. Only, this time they are older. They are returned from those missions that other parents, leaders and friend prepare those boys for. And life goes on.

Being at school has created a barrier between me and North Carolina. I do not live there anymore. There also is a barrier to my family and reality. I don't see my brothers play basketball or my sit and talk with my parents whenever I want. Only, how many games did I go to before. And how many Sunday afternoons were spent working on something else instead of with the people I love.

When I watch Morrie struggle with his health in the movie, I think of my Aunt Dell. I think of how I don't know that I have truly grieved or that the fact that she has gone as truly settled in. I think about her and her life daily. I am reminded of her by the Tabernacle Choir, by the campus I walk on, by the fact that Will lives in DC home to the FBI, that I love to call and talk to her sister, when I look at Chase and memories of her house flood into my mind and when I really think about life after this and try to imagine what she is doing there.

I feel her presence in my life sometimes. Not in the creepy way that people say they see ghosts or dead people. Just more of a feeling of acceptance, love and pride. I am saddened by the fact that I was not there to say the final goodbye to someone who meant so much to me in my life. But, I am comforted that we, as a family, took one last chance to go and see her. To see a woman far greater than I am right now. I see a lot of the things that happened to her body, happening to Morrie's and the whole movie was entirely too hard for me to watch. I don't mind crying just not at school. And every time we watched the movie I was at war with my tears. I love her and miss her terribly.

But, Morrie says something quite profound about love. He says that "we must learn to love or die." At first I didn't quite understand what he meant because we are going to die anyways. Everyone dies. It's a sad fact of life. Death is a punishment we are all subject to, just as living a life is one we all receive. Our life and death vary from person to person, but everyone is given some sort of experience. Whether it is 5 seconds or 500 years, is where it differs.

We must learn to love or die. Because as Morrie said "death ends life, not relationships."

Finally, in class our teacher put up the quote:

"We are by virtue, our relationships with others. We learn to speak by being spoken to, and we speak because others listen."

I took that from class and carried it with me throughout the day. I thought about it and what it really meant to me. I think that the quote only reiterates that we are what others make us. Not that we don't have a choice, but that we are a product that we ourselves did not create. We are not alone in our life. We could not make it in this world without other people around us. Every word that is spoken to, about or by us make us into who we are. Other people shape what we think are OUR own thoughts, opinions and insights. To be alone in this world, is to be dead. And to love and learn to love those around us is what gives our life purpose and the essence of what it truly means to live. We ARE our relationships with others. For good or for bad.

In general conference Elder Scott talked about his wife's death. I was inspired when he talked about how much closer her felt to his wife since her passing. That their relationship had not changed. But, instead that it had grown. That he still relied on her. I hope that one day my family/friends will be able to talk about me like that.

I am not ready to move on. I am not ready to make all new friends. I am not ready to go back to the humid state of NC. I am not ready to lose friends. And I will never be ready to lose family.

However, I know that I am who I am because of what I've been taught and been given. I am ready to go home and to see family. I am ready to make new friends and continue to have experiences and grow and to learn. And I am ready to see my family together forever and to see my Aunt Dell again.

Not that I am in any way alluding to my wish to have an untimely death. Just that I am happy with my life. I am working on continuing to be the person I want to be. I am excited to see my testimony grow and to be an instrument in the Lord's hands. If I have nothing else constant to hold onto in a world where I am tossed and turned, I am thankful for the Gospel. I am thankful for my testimony. For when I think I have nothing, I know I have everything.

Uncertainty.

School is going good. I have pretty good grades in my classes and am having a really good time. I love my FHE and my ward. I love my classes. I love this semester! It's a shame that it's going to end and all too soon.

I was thinking tonight at FHE, we went bowling, about the guys in my group. (Josh, Jon, Scott, William (from SC), and Alex). As I was watching them jump around and be crazy, talked with them and just have fun being goofy college kids I was thinking just how DIFFERENT their lives were going to be. Some, in just a couple months.

The boys I hang out with will be gone. They will be dressed in a suit and tie. I was kind of jealous at how quickly that change was going to come. I was kind of sad that I was losing ALL my guy friends. I was a little envious that many of them KNEW where they were going, and what they would be doing for the next two years. And I was hit with such a strong feeling of pride? I'm not sure of the right word. But, I knew those boys will be awesome missionaries. And I am uplifted by their excitement and desire to serve.

I don't really know what I want to do with my life. I got the STRONG (career test) back today. I knew I wanted to be a Communications Disorders major. But, then... all of the sudden I didn't know what I WANTED to do with that. What job will I want to do for the rest of my life?

I am full of uncertainty and indecision. I guess it's good that I have some time to just explore. But, there is so much pressure with jobs and the future that it's something hard to push to even the side of my mind.

Right now, I have to worry about housing. Yay.

Pictures from my wonderful weekend:

I love them :)

WHHAAATTT?

Dear people of the world,

I have a couple of concerns.

The first. It was 7 degrees when I left my dorm this morning at 10:50am. It was 10 degrees when I was walking home at 6:50pm. Tonight's predicted temperature... 1degree. WHHAAATTTT?

Charlotte, NC my HOMETOWN will host the 2012 Democratic National Convention? WHHAAATTT?

It's freezing cold and there is no snow on the ground. How can you be cold without snow to look at? Something just isn't right about that. WHHAAATTT?

I have 5 unopened water bottles. I have been using the same one for the past week. Refilling and refrigerating. I am going green? AND saving money like a super poor person?! WHHAAATTT?

I have been practicing the piano pretty much everyday for a week. I like it. I need more sheet music. Did Sophia Giler just say that? WHHAAATTT?

The United States once had the highest proportion of young adults with post-secondary degrees in the world. Today, the U.S. has fallen to 12th. WHHAAATTT?

American 15-year-olds do not even rank in the top half of all advanced nations when it comes to math or science literacy. WHHAAATTT?

According to a new study conducted by the Economic Policy Institute, if the U.S. trade deficit with China continues to increase at its current rate, the U.S. economy will lose over half a million jobs this year alone. WHHAAATTT?

Since the Federal Reserve was created in 1913, the U.S. dollar has lost over 95 percent of its purchasing power. WHHAAATTT?

And. To end on  a happy much funnier note an excerpt from one of my new favorite websites.

I picked this one out for my mom. ;) I don't really mind when you ask. I just found it and it mentioned a mom.

Dear mom who always asks who I'm texting,
Oh, just that creepy man that lives down the street. The one who always gives me candy.

College Reflections!

One of my young women's leaders sent me a facebook message the other day with a list of the following questions:

1. What do you wish someone had told you about college?
2. What temptations are the same from high school, what are different temptations than you experienced in high school?
3. what has been disappointing or different from your expectations?
4. what is your favorite part about college?
5. Is living on your own different than what you thought it would be like....better or worse?
6.How often are your beliefs/morals/principles challenged by your friends? And in what ways are they challenged?
7. How has your relationship with the Lord changed...better or struggling a little?

I figured for my blog it can't hurt to keep those answers for my own personal reflection right?!

1. Being away from home. It sounds like a lot of fun. You get to hang out with you friends whenever and wherever you want to! You get to go to bed when you choose. You get to do your homework whenever you’re feeling it. Heck, you get to eat and spend your money however you choose. One of the hardest things about leaving was leaving my family. It really is so true that you don’t know what you got till it’s gone. I miss my family like crazy. The things you can’t stand about them become the things you miss the most. The things you love about them haunt you and make you miss them more. But, it is fun. It is a lot of fun. And, I am thankful I had the opportunity finally learn what it will be like to be on my own. I miss my family, but it has taught me what love truly is. And, what it means to truly miss someone.

2. Ok. Let me put the rumors to rest. ;) BYU has drinking, it has drugs, it has sex, and it has everything any other school has. It is on a smaller scale and it is kept under wraps. But, it is here. It may not be as much of a temptation because the majority of people frown upon it. If you want it, it’s here. However, there is a different kind of temptation. You lose your identity. Ask yourself who you were in high school. I’ll tell you, you were the Mormon. You were the Mormon and people labeled you as such. However, out here… everyone is Mormon. You surround yourself with thousands of people who are guess what… just like you. But, their standards are different. Some will watch R rated movies, some will drink, some will think necking and petting are OK ;) (that was for you) and some will abide by every rule that is under the sun. It’s finding out where you fit in. What your standards are. And when all the Mormons are putting in an R-rated movie do you have the guts to be the one to stand up and say something?

3. Something that I have been disappointed with is myself! I was (pretty much) an all A student. And grades were not hard to maintain. I’m sure all of you know that as well. I’m sure it’s very easy to make good grades and I’m sure hardcore studying is not what you do on your weeknights. But, it is required. I made a 3.28 GPA my first semester. My second C ever. Ever. Like in the history of my grades. I was disappointed but who cares? Everyone makes a C. It’s actually healthy. Classes are hard. You think you’re prepared but that first exam comes around and guess what… you weren’t you gotta study! You have to work to make the grades. I was disappointed that I slacked a little! Something different than my expectations though was again the severity of the schoolwork! I thought oh I can handle it but, it is HARD HARD HARD. Get used to working hard because it doesn’t get any easier.

4. I love the freedom. I love being able to go wherever and whenever I want and NOT HAVING TO CHECK IN! It is such an amazing feeling to be on your own. It’s sad but it’s worth it! Making your own schedule and picking who and what you do is so great. It’s hard to manage your time and not procrastinate. But, getting out of class and going out to eat without calling to ask if it’s ok first is like so liberating! Ha. I also like meeting new people. It is so fun to sit next to people and just talk! Granted not everyone is nice and willing to talk but, it is fun to just be who you want to be! I have the goal to go to the same class every day and sit next to someone different each class. I want to give them a fake name/background story. But, I always try to sit next to someone who looks fun/cute… so I never do. Because I don’t want them looking for a Stephanie Harting on facebook! But, meeting tons of new people is a plus. It’s nice to get out of Charlotte and talk to people who have had far worse, harder, more exciting etc… lives!

5. I kinda covered this in the beginning. Different. And the same. Making food sucks. I miss my mom’s home cooked meals. I miss MY bed. MY room. MY car. MY job. The list goes on and on! But, it is different in that while I knew I’d miss my family, I miss them more than I thought possible. It is different in that it feels good to manage your life. It is different in that I can’t go home. But, it is better because I love my new roommates. I love my new ward. I love being here. I can’t imagine going anywhere else. I love that I belong! College has it’s ups and downs. It’s a roller coaster for sure. But at least the ride is fun right?

6. Ok. They are challenged a lot. Because, there are people who have done far worse and people who have done NO wrong (it would seem). It becomes hard to say where you lie. Because, well everyone judges! Either you’re super inexperienced or you’re bad. It takes a lot of thought to answer some questions. But, once you find the people you trust it’s awesome. However, they are challenged! You will meet (out here) all kinds of people from literally all over. They will say/do things that you would never do. And they will ask you to join. The question becomes do you say anything. Is a NCMO (non-committal make-out) really that bad? Is one R-rated movie so terrible. The list goes on and on. But that is only until you find your place. With your roommates. Or the girls in your class. Well, I have tons of guy friends, but, once you find you niche it gets better. It gets easier. There will always be temptation. Whether it is to cheat on a quiz or homework, watch an inappropriate movie or say/do things that weeks ago you would’ve never done, the temptation is there. Be strong! As Alma says " O thou child of hell, why tempt ye me? Knowest thou that the righteous yieldeth to no such temptations?" :) And you can take that knowledge to any school you go to!

7. Being at BYU has strengthened my relationship ten-fold. It really is the Lord’s university. You walk around campus and everyone has the same religious beliefs as you. Basically. Yes they will differ and yes they are on different levels. But, everyone knows who Nephi, Joseph Smith or Thomas S. Monson is. It’s comforting. But, college has been hard. It is nice knowing that because we have the gospel we have medicine for the hard times! Life isn’t always going to be easy. There is going to be temptation. There are going to be hard things and hard classes and struggles. But the Lord is there and he is always there. I love going to a college where I can take religion classes. They are ridicuoulsly hard. They have been some of my harder classes. But they are well worth it. I have learned more in those classes than I have at any fireside or seminary class. Because BYU is unique in that it offers “institute” as a class and you go more than once a week, your testimony grows. ONLY IF YOU PUT THE EFFORT IN. I love going. I love praying. I love my Heavenly Father and my Savior and I know He lives. How truly amazing it is to go to a school that intertwines faith and education. It truly is wonderful to go to a school where prayer is prevalent. I love it here. I love being here. I am where I belong. BYU is amazing! My first semester was hard, yes. And I relied on the Lord and my parents a lot. But, it was not impossible and CLEARLY I made it through. It had the bad but it was also filled with the good!

Look into it! It’s not hard! All the information (deadlines, scholarships and overall information) are there on the website! BYU-I is an amazing school as well! I have met several people who go there now and friends who went/are there. They love it. Any school is good though! Don’t mess around too much or get to upset to leave high school because it only gets better! :)

Hopefully these answers reflect the roller coaster ride of emotions my first semester truly was!!

Picture time! :)

No Title.

So, I forgot to blog yesterday. I just can't think of anything to write. I decided that since this is my journal thing, I was going to write everyday for a year. Nikole is making a 365 blog where she includes a picture/description of her day or something like that. I really liked that idea and am probably going to steal the picture thing.

In conclusion, starting tomorrow January 10, 2011, I will be posting a picture of something random from my day on the blog. Even if it doesn't pertain to the blog itself. I think that's something I'd like to have for future reference... or days when i'm just looking back.

Church is at 8:30 in the morning. Sounds terrible huh? It is. Not church but waking up. Like, once i'm there, i'm loving being there and i'm actually for the most part awake and attentive. It's just rough getting up. Especially since last night I was anticipating my alarm going off. So I woke up far too many times. Once, I just was laying there waiting. I reached up checked my phone... 4am. Gross.

I am having trouble staying asleep in this new dorm. I am restless most nights. I'm not sure why though. I dunno.

Anyways I have an interview with the bishop in 10 min. So, I'm going to go make myself look presentable!
Also, there is a CES Fireside tonight. At 6pm. At the Marriott Center with Elder Cristofferson. So it should be good.

Have a WONDERFUL Sunday.

Things that Make Me Smile...

Today I received an email from someone I love very dearly with the advice "Be happy and smile- people are attracted to happy people."

And, well, who DOESN'T like to be attractive?! ;)

So, in that light I decided to make a list of all things that make me happy/smile so when i'm feeling sad/down I can come and look at this!

  • Seeing or hanging out with my family.
  • Emails from my Dad.
  • Talking to my family on the phone. (Extended and Immediate).
  • Random nice texts/emails/facebook posts etc...
  • Weird and random yet surprisingly flowing conversations with the BF A-rod.
  • People commenting on my blog.
  • Being around Chase.
  • Sweet, cute, honest boys.
  • Driving in the car, listening to my little brothers tell me about their day.
  • Listening to GOOD music.
  • Good, uplifting church lessons.
  • Thoughts of summer.
  • Looking at my snowboard.
  • Laughing. With anyone.
  • My mom. She really is the prettiest lady in the whole world. I have the picture to prove it. It's become one of my favorites.
  • My Dad's funny, but SUPER lame jokes.
  • I already mentioned Chase.
  • Hayden and his seemingly quiet nature, yet secretly funny personality.
  • Blake and his muscles.
  • My Grandma. I love her.
  • My Aunt and Uncle in Utah, and their continued kindness and support.
  • My CuZ. When she talks to me.
  • Letters. Or mail in general.
  • Good friends.
  • Free food.
  • Snow. And warm weather. It's a shame they can't coexist.
  • Getting done with a long day of class.
  • Working with kids. Or just talking to them. Especially Bella. I swear.
  • Which brings me to the Tanners and the Taylors. Thinking about them and talking to them makes me realize just how nice it is to have people who aren't quite family really be like family.
  • Late night conversations that make little sense.
  • Late night conversations that make perfect sense and are REAL.
  • Pictures. And being weird in them.
  • Pictures where I look GOOD.
  • The knowledge I have about WHO I am, WHERE I'm going and WHY I'm here.
  • Being asked out on a date.
  • Getting a compliment.
  • Entertaining others.
  • Good dreams.
  • Funny jokes/phrases or comments people make casually.
  • Awkward situations.
  • Family. Have I mentioned that yet?
Most recent. Sorry Dad. I don't have one with you. :(
On here before. BUT the most recent of all 6 of us that I have.

The Whole Sammons Clan!

  •  Having fun with COOL roommates.
  • Karl. Aka the best poster/friend ever. He's on the back of my door.
  • Ice skating and my World Dance class.
  • Straight, non-frizzy, hair.
  • My ipod. I need a new one though.
  • Days when I look so good that i'd date myself. ;)
  • Learning sign language. My teacher is actually legit deaf. I went up and tried to talk to her and we just could NOT communicate.
  • This list.
  • Doing nice things for people.
  • Changing into pajamas at the end of a long day.
  • Taking off heels after walking around in them ALL day.
  • Writing a good paper.
  • Oh and family.
Well, I gotta go! There is some dance/activity thing starting at 8 and I gotta go get ready!!

In the words of my personal idol Glozell (for those of you who are unaware of this gem... youtube is all I have to say):

Fresh Start!

So. First day of classes. And I have officially declared my major. I did some research today on different majors and what all I wanted to do and here's what I came up with... Communications Disorders.

What is that might you ask?!

degree in communication disorders can lead to a satisfying and rewarding career in health care, medicine, research, or education. Communication science and disorder degree programs prepare students to diagnose and treat a variety of hearing and speech disorders in children, the elderly, or patients who have suffered speech or hearing trauma. Students can anticipate careers as:
·         Speech pathologists
·         Audiologists
·         Special education teachers
·         Private school administrators
·         Counselors
·         Consultants
·         Speech and hearing therapists

I got that definition online. So don't quote me. Basically it satisfies all my job requirements! I get to work
with people, help kids, learn sign language and do some kind of service! Much less depressing than social
work, huh Mom?

Anyway, today was the first day of classes. I switched some around so now my schedule is just a tad different! Still 7 classes... Only 15 credit hours instead of my 14. Plus now I gotta go sell some books back fun stuff! Raise your hand if you're jealous. ;)

On a side note. Me and Jenna are taking world dance. We learned how to do the Komletro. It's a Norwegian  dance. Pretty simple but very fun to watch. We'll have to take a picture of us doing it. We look... silly. To say the very least. On a PLUS(er?)/more plus side, we met (before class. Luckily we got there early) and we bumped into Thomas (he sat with us at a basketball game once) and his friend Devin. We spent a good 20 min laughing and joking around. They are cute guys. Ha. I dunno where I'm going with that.

But, me and Jenna went to the gym. Who's shocked? My mom? Aeryn? Ha. Yep! We did. We had planned on going. I was iffy at the beginning of class. But that's where Thomas and Devin were headed so we met up with them after dance. We only worked out for 30 minutes but hey you gotta start somewhere?! It wasn't intense and the stair master or elliptical said i burned 100-some calories. And I learned how to do some full body lift thing? I dunno. Our plan is to go every Monday and Wednesday after dance!

It'll take some persuading but, hopefully I will begin WANTING to go! And will start to maybe... possibly enjoy it. Doubt it. :) But, it's worth a try.
