Thoughts altogether...

Ok! So recap of today...

I had a BLAST for FHE today. Our FHE brothers are BEYOND fun.  They are all very sweet and into actually having FHE or Family Home Evening. And actually planning it. It's a nice breath of fresh air.

I met a boy from Ukraine today! He sat next to me in one of my classes! It had been a long time since I'd heard someone speak with a Russian accent so, it took sometime getting used to! His name is Maxim. Or, Max.

Ha I opened a bank account with Wells Fargo. I need to access my money.

Umm.. I took my 2nd ASL class today. I hope it's not too early to say I love it. I'm slowly falling in love with using the language. And I just feel such strong feelings for my Professor. It's weird to explain. Like she talks well signs (she's actually deaf) and I can just tell she is SUCH a sweet person, with such good intentions. And like (In a not weird way) I feel love for her. And compassion. It's like I just want to help her. Like I want to give her my hearing even just for a day. It's really not fair. I can't imagine going through what she has had to her whole life. Not being able to hear would be near unbearable. Never hearing her own voice, hearing others, hearing the TV, even whistles when playing sports (instead the ref has to throw his hands in the air to signal a call), never hearing praise, or support. I just feel like it is all taken for granted. I am so thankful that I have the ability to walk, talk, see, smell, hear and have full function of my brain and body. How often we complain about our inability to do something, but, it can always be worse.

A picture as I digress... This next part is of a more spiritual nature than anything else.

At the game on Saturday!

I had an amazing interview with my new Bishop yesterday. He is such an inspired man. I felt the Spirit so strongly as I walked into his office. As I talked to him about my family, my friends back home, the things I wanted to do with my life, my talents and hobbies, I knew he was truly interested. I knew he WANTED to know. Something I feel I need to write down so I don't forget it is something he said to me. As we were talking about my life goals he said " I want you to know, it didn't take long for the Spirit to tell me what a special young woman you are. You are destined for greatness. Wonderful things are headed your way. Be careful with the choices you make, be careful with the young men. Especially here things tend to move much faster than they would anywhere else. But, I know you of all people will make the right decisions." The whole experience was something I needed at this time. I finally feel like i'm in the Ward I belong. It feels right here. The people are nice and the boys are friendly. The people here genuinely care. I feel like I will become a better person here more than I would've in my other Ward.

He also counseled me on the importance of prayer and daily scripture study. I had made a resolve to pray morning and evening before I left. I did that for a good week. Upon arriving home I got out of that routine partly because of jet lag and partly because I had broken my habit. I just was less focused. I woke up late and rolled out ready to start my day. I went to bed late and passed out.

But, I am determined to start that habit again. Starting last night. Elder Christofferson came and spoke to us last night. I feel so privileged to be around General Authorities and men of great influence (Condeleeza Rice comes the 13th!!). Seeing them speak in person is unreal. He told us to prepare now for the future but not to live in it. He counseled us to start doing things now to prepare us for the future. He told us to live day by day. He talked about prayer. He incorporated Moses and the Children of Israel and their wandering for 40 years. He told the story about the manna falling from the sky. How to be fed they needed the Lord's help. That it was through Him and keeping His commandments they were able to be fed and eventually provide for themselves. He told us how important it is that we live by the same principles. Manna is known as "Bread from Heaven" and it is a type of Christ. That we should live our lives in similar ways. That we should seek Christ's help and guidance everyday and night. We weren't sent here to fail, our existence here isn't chance and we don't need to do it alone.

It was just such a good fireside and day altogether. We talked about prayer at church as well. And becoming more Christlike! I don't think it is just a random common theme that seems to be going around! It definitely was brought to my attention (in my opinion) because I so need to work on it!. We live in such a tough world. Even here at BYU (the gathering of all Mormons or Happy Valley as it's called) there are places to err. And things to mess up and ways to be unkind and just plain bad! It too is full of the good and the not so good. I realized from the speakers that it just doesn't make sense for me to try to do it all on my own! To take the knowledge I've been given for granted. I think something I love most about religion is that everyone is different. Everyone believes in something different. Everyone understands things on a different level. But that most religions are taught to pray. I mean the Muslims pray everyday five times a day facing East! Christian Churches have Sacrament Prayers. I think it's interesting that pretty much all humans involved in religion are taught how to give thanks and to plead for help.

It is a comforting feeling to know that religion aside, most everyone, believes that they are a Child of God. That because they are a Son or Daughter of a King, they have that divine spark within them to communicate with a higher being.

Sorry this is long. I could go for hours really. But, I could talk your ear off about just any subject I find interesting. Tomorrow I have something cool planned it's something I learned in my Student Development/College Study Skills class. I really liked it. Anyway, I have to shower. My hair was looking kinda greasy (so I wore a hat all day). I'm thinking a pixie haircut... any thoughts? ;) Mom?

No Title.

So, I forgot to blog yesterday. I just can't think of anything to write. I decided that since this is my journal thing, I was going to write everyday for a year. Nikole is making a 365 blog where she includes a picture/description of her day or something like that. I really liked that idea and am probably going to steal the picture thing.

In conclusion, starting tomorrow January 10, 2011, I will be posting a picture of something random from my day on the blog. Even if it doesn't pertain to the blog itself. I think that's something I'd like to have for future reference... or days when i'm just looking back.

Church is at 8:30 in the morning. Sounds terrible huh? It is. Not church but waking up. Like, once i'm there, i'm loving being there and i'm actually for the most part awake and attentive. It's just rough getting up. Especially since last night I was anticipating my alarm going off. So I woke up far too many times. Once, I just was laying there waiting. I reached up checked my phone... 4am. Gross.

I am having trouble staying asleep in this new dorm. I am restless most nights. I'm not sure why though. I dunno.

Anyways I have an interview with the bishop in 10 min. So, I'm going to go make myself look presentable!
Also, there is a CES Fireside tonight. At 6pm. At the Marriott Center with Elder Cristofferson. So it should be good.

Have a WONDERFUL Sunday.

Things that Make Me Smile...

Today I received an email from someone I love very dearly with the advice "Be happy and smile- people are attracted to happy people."

And, well, who DOESN'T like to be attractive?! ;)

So, in that light I decided to make a list of all things that make me happy/smile so when i'm feeling sad/down I can come and look at this!

  • Seeing or hanging out with my family.
  • Emails from my Dad.
  • Talking to my family on the phone. (Extended and Immediate).
  • Random nice texts/emails/facebook posts etc...
  • Weird and random yet surprisingly flowing conversations with the BF A-rod.
  • People commenting on my blog.
  • Being around Chase.
  • Sweet, cute, honest boys.
  • Driving in the car, listening to my little brothers tell me about their day.
  • Listening to GOOD music.
  • Good, uplifting church lessons.
  • Thoughts of summer.
  • Looking at my snowboard.
  • Laughing. With anyone.
  • My mom. She really is the prettiest lady in the whole world. I have the picture to prove it. It's become one of my favorites.
  • My Dad's funny, but SUPER lame jokes.
  • I already mentioned Chase.
  • Hayden and his seemingly quiet nature, yet secretly funny personality.
  • Blake and his muscles.
  • My Grandma. I love her.
  • My Aunt and Uncle in Utah, and their continued kindness and support.
  • My CuZ. When she talks to me.
  • Letters. Or mail in general.
  • Good friends.
  • Free food.
  • Snow. And warm weather. It's a shame they can't coexist.
  • Getting done with a long day of class.
  • Working with kids. Or just talking to them. Especially Bella. I swear.
  • Which brings me to the Tanners and the Taylors. Thinking about them and talking to them makes me realize just how nice it is to have people who aren't quite family really be like family.
  • Late night conversations that make little sense.
  • Late night conversations that make perfect sense and are REAL.
  • Pictures. And being weird in them.
  • Pictures where I look GOOD.
  • The knowledge I have about WHO I am, WHERE I'm going and WHY I'm here.
  • Being asked out on a date.
  • Getting a compliment.
  • Entertaining others.
  • Good dreams.
  • Funny jokes/phrases or comments people make casually.
  • Awkward situations.
  • Family. Have I mentioned that yet?
Most recent. Sorry Dad. I don't have one with you. :(
On here before. BUT the most recent of all 6 of us that I have.

The Whole Sammons Clan!

  •  Having fun with COOL roommates.
  • Karl. Aka the best poster/friend ever. He's on the back of my door.
  • Ice skating and my World Dance class.
  • Straight, non-frizzy, hair.
  • My ipod. I need a new one though.
  • Days when I look so good that i'd date myself. ;)
  • Learning sign language. My teacher is actually legit deaf. I went up and tried to talk to her and we just could NOT communicate.
  • This list.
  • Doing nice things for people.
  • Changing into pajamas at the end of a long day.
  • Taking off heels after walking around in them ALL day.
  • Writing a good paper.
  • Oh and family.
Well, I gotta go! There is some dance/activity thing starting at 8 and I gotta go get ready!!

In the words of my personal idol Glozell (for those of you who are unaware of this gem... youtube is all I have to say):

The Recap.

Today has been fun. Today has been long. Today I am officially worn out and READY for the weekend.

8:30am- Wake up. Shower.
9:45am- Leave for class.
10:50am - Meet in the Wilk. Get Chase lunch. Because, I'm a nice sister. He's cute and I love him.
11:00am- Begin the LONG wait for a meeting with my counselor. Here's why:
I get there. I sign in. The lady says there are 5 people ahead of me. I say "Ok, how long is the wait normally?" "It depends on how many questions people ask." OK thank you for being of NO help. I go talk to Chase for literally 10 min. I come back. I ask about the wait time. She says there are 7 people ahead of me. Yes, this was not what she had originally told me. Yes, it was a red flag. And yes, I am a nice person so I sat down to wait my turn. No questions asked. 12:30pm rolls around and 10+ people have gone ahead of me. I call my mom to complain. I say it loud enough so that the useless woman at the desk can hear me. She gets up and decides she has to go on a lunch break. Useless. So, I proceed to walk up to the desk to the innocent young man working. I say in my angriest/politest voice I have "Excuse me, can I ask what exactly is going on?" Confused look. "I have been waiting for an hour and half. I came she said 5 people were ahead of me. Then I asked again and she said 7. Ten people have now gone and I am still sitting here." "Oh... um... well... what's your name?" "Sophia Giler, G-I-L-E-R." "Well, uh... I guess... it looks like your name was erased from the line. The computer acted up." "What?" "We can go ahead and put you at the front of the line, can I see your student ID?" I hand it over he swipes it and gives it back. I return to my chair and eavesdrop as he tells the other girl that the next counselor that comes out is to ask for Sophia. A kind old guy comes out and says my name.

12:45-1:00pm- I meet with the nice guy. He looks over my schedule and keeps talking about how well planned out it is. How well, I did the first semester and how can he help. I tell him my concerns, as well as my major (as previously mentioned it's communications disorders). We look it over. Stats 121 (the math I switched into but wanted to know if it was required) is a General AS WELL AS required for my major. He looks over my schedule and tells me how I must've been inspired. If not inspired at least spired. Get the joke? I didn't either. But he was nice, friendly and old so I gave him a nice laugh. We talked about my major and he gave me this really helpful sheet that planned out what courses I had to take. What a good guy.

1:00pm- Talked with my mom on the phone. Got lunch with Nikole and Jenna.
1:40-3:40pm Went to my first day of Ice Skating. I love ice skating I decided. I really do. It is quite fun! I'm not the greatest but, I was not the worst.
4:00pm- First day of ASL. Aka sign language. Found out the hard way she is actually deaf. I was a little behind because it's on Monday-Thursday. So I had missed two days. But, I managed. I love to sign already. But, I'm not particularly fast.
5:00pm-6:00pm- Got my new books. Returned the ones for the classes I dropped.

Finally I am at home. Studying and reading. Will and Scott (2 of our FHE brothers) come to the door. Alex (another FHE brother) has made carrot cake for us. Yay! It was alright. Will is pretty cool. He is 17. Which is weird cause he's really nice. And super smart?! Ha he's had a really INTERESTING/Tough family life. So talking to him was really cool just to get to know him!

Anyways. More reading. I'm mainly ending this because I REALLY have to use the bathroom.(number one, no worries). I'll go Linda Giler Style. With the door open and the lights off. ;)

Love you all!

Also, I love getting mail. As a side note.

Fresh Start!

So. First day of classes. And I have officially declared my major. I did some research today on different majors and what all I wanted to do and here's what I came up with... Communications Disorders.

What is that might you ask?!

degree in communication disorders can lead to a satisfying and rewarding career in health care, medicine, research, or education. Communication science and disorder degree programs prepare students to diagnose and treat a variety of hearing and speech disorders in children, the elderly, or patients who have suffered speech or hearing trauma. Students can anticipate careers as:
·         Speech pathologists
·         Audiologists
·         Special education teachers
·         Private school administrators
·         Counselors
·         Consultants
·         Speech and hearing therapists

I got that definition online. So don't quote me. Basically it satisfies all my job requirements! I get to work
with people, help kids, learn sign language and do some kind of service! Much less depressing than social
work, huh Mom?

Anyway, today was the first day of classes. I switched some around so now my schedule is just a tad different! Still 7 classes... Only 15 credit hours instead of my 14. Plus now I gotta go sell some books back fun stuff! Raise your hand if you're jealous. ;)

On a side note. Me and Jenna are taking world dance. We learned how to do the Komletro. It's a Norwegian  dance. Pretty simple but very fun to watch. We'll have to take a picture of us doing it. We look... silly. To say the very least. On a PLUS(er?)/more plus side, we met (before class. Luckily we got there early) and we bumped into Thomas (he sat with us at a basketball game once) and his friend Devin. We spent a good 20 min laughing and joking around. They are cute guys. Ha. I dunno where I'm going with that.

But, me and Jenna went to the gym. Who's shocked? My mom? Aeryn? Ha. Yep! We did. We had planned on going. I was iffy at the beginning of class. But that's where Thomas and Devin were headed so we met up with them after dance. We only worked out for 30 minutes but hey you gotta start somewhere?! It wasn't intense and the stair master or elliptical said i burned 100-some calories. And I learned how to do some full body lift thing? I dunno. Our plan is to go every Monday and Wednesday after dance!

It'll take some persuading but, hopefully I will begin WANTING to go! And will start to maybe... possibly enjoy it. Doubt it. :) But, it's worth a try.

Back to the Beginning... Well Middle.

I titled this blog while sitting on the plane flying to the snowy state of Utah. I thought for a long time about school and about home. I came to the conclusion that it's hard going home. It's even harder coming back to school.

You get complacent. Or at least I did. I got comfortable. I missed my family and I loved them. But, I was USED to not seeing them. And that had gotten... for lack of better phrasing... Ok with me. I knew that I would see them. But, I had stopped dwelling on missing them. On the way I used to live. I had grown accustomed to waking myself up, making my own meals, planning my own schedule and setting my own bedtime.

Life on my own isn't better or worse than life at home. It is just different.

But, going home was a tease. It was perfect. It was fun. It was filled with the people I've been dying to see all semester. I didn't miss too much about school. I missed the people, my family out here and making my own schedule. I didn't mind going back to family life though.

Break was short. It set me back in a sense. I had gotten over the fact that I wasn't going back to live at home. I had finally wrestled the urge to go back to what was easy and familiar. I had pinned it to the mat so to speak.

Not to say I regret going home at all. It was everything I wanted. I needed that break. But, here I am sitting in my dorm at 10:45pm feeling like it's almost 1am. I miss home already. I am happy to be back, but I am ready for the fun to start. Last semester was fun. Only it wasn't exactly what I had had in mind.

I am back to the middle. I miss my family and friends but, I know how to deal with it now. I am ready. I am excited for summer. However, I am also excited for this semester to be what I was hoping for in the last one. Cross your fingers for me.

I'm not back to the beginning or square one... instead i'm starting from the middle. Wish me luck.

P.S I love you. :)

Birthdays...

It's officially my birthday. That's right... I'm 19 years old.

Birthdays are a weird concept. We celebrate the day we were born, a celebration of today or that day, yet on our "special day" we're always thinking about the years ahead. How old we're GETting. But, that's to be expected right? Cause we're not getting any younger.

This birthday hit me harder than any of the ones before. Every birthday (or most) seem to have held SOME significance.

At 5, I was ready for school. At 8, in our church, I was excited and ready to be baptized. At 12, I joined the ranks with the other awkward "pre-teens" dying for 13 to come around. And when it did I couldn't wait to be 15 and get my permit. At 16 I was ready to hit the road. (For most people) 17 years old means... R rated movies. At 18 I was legal, ready to buy my cigarettes, lottery tickets and date anyone of any age. (Just kidding, Mom.)

Here I sit... 19 years old. And what's this birthday's significance? I'm almost 20. That's old. In one year I will be TWENTY years old. Where has the time gone? Where are the days where I picked my nose and watched TV ;). The days where I was excited to learn and ready to go. The days where I sat around the house and goofed off with friends. The days where I went out on dates only to be summoned home as soon as the clock came CLOSE to midnight.

Time shows no mercy. I am 19 years old. That is not OK. My childhood is gone. I am more of an adult than I was last year. I want to go back to middle school. I want to go back to when things were easy. When my Mom made my meals and did my laundry. I want to go back to feeling at ease and at home. I want a room that is ALL mine. I want to be in a house where 3 crazy boys are always stirring up trouble.

Instead, while I start the New Year off at home in North Carolina, the majority of it will be spent in the frozen arctic of Provo, Utah. Away from the antics of my little brothers (luckily i'll have Chase), sharing a room half the size of mine now, making my own food, doing SOME/Very Little (Thank you Aunt B) of my laundry, and I will be starting more classes that are probably harder than the last.

19 is different. 19...

  • Nineteen is the 8th smallest prime number.
  • 19 was the emote (in video games) before LOL was used.
  • The nineteenth state to enter the union was Indiana (Shout-out to my roommate Jenna).
  • According to the Qur'an there are 19 angels guarding Hell.
  • 19 is the atomic number of potassium.
  • 19 most often represents selfishness, dependency, inability to see things from others' viewpoints, isolation, greed, theft, self-importance, addiction, aggression, intolerance, ego-centric outlook, abuse of power, disrespect of others, coercion, refusal to seek help from others, and self-centeredness. Success comes after establishing balanced self-sufficiency, yet also a capacity for cooperation and interpersonal skills.
  • According to Stephen King's the Dark Tower "to be" or "to have gone 19" means something has gone wrong or is just plain weird.
  • 19 is an AMAZING Renault car.
  • BUT, most importantly nineteen is the last number to contain the suffix... teen.

Life goes by quickly. For example, this year flew by. ;) It really did. I graduated, went on a cruise/family reunion and finished a semester of college in the blink of an eye. Where is life going?!

Enough of the wishing. Besides other than buying alcohol at 21 nothing good happens after 18. So, enough of the wishing. Enough of the desire to move on to the next chapter of my life. At 19, this is the birthday where I am going to slow down. I am going to stop and appreciate what I have. I am going to enjoy being 19. Because, one day, when I'm older I'll look back and wish to be 19 again.

If there is one thing you can't get back... it's time. And harsh words/hurt feelings, farts and money from that stingy friend. So, I guess that's more than one thing. But, whatever.

"Don't count every hour in the day, make every hour in the day count."
"This time, like all times, is a very good one, if we but know what to do with it." -Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Minutes pass by into hours. And a minute ago is gone forever. Trying to stop and hold onto time is like trying to catch rain. You will catch some of it, little small drops that are teeny in comparison to the rest that is slipping through your fingers. The majority of it will fall, forgotten. But, you will always remember the things that matter and what you had because your hand will always get wet. (Was that a bad analogy? It is 3am.)

Make today count.

Oh. And Happy Birthday to me. :)
