The Recap.

Today has been fun. Today has been long. Today I am officially worn out and READY for the weekend.

8:30am- Wake up. Shower.
9:45am- Leave for class.
10:50am - Meet in the Wilk. Get Chase lunch. Because, I'm a nice sister. He's cute and I love him.
11:00am- Begin the LONG wait for a meeting with my counselor. Here's why:
I get there. I sign in. The lady says there are 5 people ahead of me. I say "Ok, how long is the wait normally?" "It depends on how many questions people ask." OK thank you for being of NO help. I go talk to Chase for literally 10 min. I come back. I ask about the wait time. She says there are 7 people ahead of me. Yes, this was not what she had originally told me. Yes, it was a red flag. And yes, I am a nice person so I sat down to wait my turn. No questions asked. 12:30pm rolls around and 10+ people have gone ahead of me. I call my mom to complain. I say it loud enough so that the useless woman at the desk can hear me. She gets up and decides she has to go on a lunch break. Useless. So, I proceed to walk up to the desk to the innocent young man working. I say in my angriest/politest voice I have "Excuse me, can I ask what exactly is going on?" Confused look. "I have been waiting for an hour and half. I came she said 5 people were ahead of me. Then I asked again and she said 7. Ten people have now gone and I am still sitting here." "Oh... um... well... what's your name?" "Sophia Giler, G-I-L-E-R." "Well, uh... I guess... it looks like your name was erased from the line. The computer acted up." "What?" "We can go ahead and put you at the front of the line, can I see your student ID?" I hand it over he swipes it and gives it back. I return to my chair and eavesdrop as he tells the other girl that the next counselor that comes out is to ask for Sophia. A kind old guy comes out and says my name.

12:45-1:00pm- I meet with the nice guy. He looks over my schedule and keeps talking about how well planned out it is. How well, I did the first semester and how can he help. I tell him my concerns, as well as my major (as previously mentioned it's communications disorders). We look it over. Stats 121 (the math I switched into but wanted to know if it was required) is a General AS WELL AS required for my major. He looks over my schedule and tells me how I must've been inspired. If not inspired at least spired. Get the joke? I didn't either. But he was nice, friendly and old so I gave him a nice laugh. We talked about my major and he gave me this really helpful sheet that planned out what courses I had to take. What a good guy.

1:00pm- Talked with my mom on the phone. Got lunch with Nikole and Jenna.
1:40-3:40pm Went to my first day of Ice Skating. I love ice skating I decided. I really do. It is quite fun! I'm not the greatest but, I was not the worst.
4:00pm- First day of ASL. Aka sign language. Found out the hard way she is actually deaf. I was a little behind because it's on Monday-Thursday. So I had missed two days. But, I managed. I love to sign already. But, I'm not particularly fast.
5:00pm-6:00pm- Got my new books. Returned the ones for the classes I dropped.

Finally I am at home. Studying and reading. Will and Scott (2 of our FHE brothers) come to the door. Alex (another FHE brother) has made carrot cake for us. Yay! It was alright. Will is pretty cool. He is 17. Which is weird cause he's really nice. And super smart?! Ha he's had a really INTERESTING/Tough family life. So talking to him was really cool just to get to know him!

Anyways. More reading. I'm mainly ending this because I REALLY have to use the bathroom.(number one, no worries). I'll go Linda Giler Style. With the door open and the lights off. ;)

Love you all!

Also, I love getting mail. As a side note.

Fresh Start!

So. First day of classes. And I have officially declared my major. I did some research today on different majors and what all I wanted to do and here's what I came up with... Communications Disorders.

What is that might you ask?!

A degree in communication disorders can lead to a satisfying and rewarding career in health care, medicine, research, or education. Communication science and disorder degree programs prepare students to diagnose and treat a variety of hearing and speech disorders in children, the elderly, or patients who have suffered speech or hearing trauma. Students can anticipate careers as:
·         Speech pathologists
·         Audiologists
·         Special education teachers
·         Private school administrators
·         Counselors
·         Consultants
·         Speech and hearing therapists

I got that definition online. So don't quote me. Basically it satisfies all my job requirements! I get to work
with people, help kids, learn sign language and do some kind of service! Much less depressing than social
work, huh Mom?

Anyway, today was the first day of classes. I switched some around so now my schedule is just a tad different! Still 7 classes... Only 15 credit hours instead of my 14. Plus now I gotta go sell some books back fun stuff! Raise your hand if you're jealous. ;)

On a side note. Me and Jenna are taking world dance. We learned how to do the Komletro. It's a Norwegian  dance. Pretty simple but very fun to watch. We'll have to take a picture of us doing it. We look... silly. To say the very least. On a PLUS(er?)/more plus side, we met (before class. Luckily we got there early) and we bumped into Thomas (he sat with us at a basketball game once) and his friend Devin. We spent a good 20 min laughing and joking around. They are cute guys. Ha. I dunno where I'm going with that.

But, me and Jenna went to the gym. Who's shocked? My mom? Aeryn? Ha. Yep! We did. We had planned on going. I was iffy at the beginning of class. But that's where Thomas and Devin were headed so we met up with them after dance. We only worked out for 30 minutes but hey you gotta start somewhere?! It wasn't intense and the stair master or elliptical said i burned 100-some calories. And I learned how to do some full body lift thing? I dunno. Our plan is to go every Monday and Wednesday after dance!

It'll take some persuading but, hopefully I will begin WANTING to go! And will start to maybe... possibly enjoy it. Doubt it. :) But, it's worth a try.

Back to the Beginning... Well Middle.

I titled this blog while sitting on the plane flying to the snowy state of Utah. I thought for a long time about school and about home. I came to the conclusion that it's hard going home. It's even harder coming back to school.

You get complacent. Or at least I did. I got comfortable. I missed my family and I loved them. But, I was USED to not seeing them. And that had gotten... for lack of better phrasing... Ok with me. I knew that I would see them. But, I had stopped dwelling on missing them. On the way I used to live. I had grown accustomed to waking myself up, making my own meals, planning my own schedule and setting my own bedtime.

Life on my own isn't better or worse than life at home. It is just different.

But, going home was a tease. It was perfect. It was fun. It was filled with the people I've been dying to see all semester. I didn't miss too much about school. I missed the people, my family out here and making my own schedule. I didn't mind going back to family life though.

Break was short. It set me back in a sense. I had gotten over the fact that I wasn't going back to live at home. I had finally wrestled the urge to go back to what was easy and familiar. I had pinned it to the mat so to speak.

Not to say I regret going home at all. It was everything I wanted. I needed that break. But, here I am sitting in my dorm at 10:45pm feeling like it's almost 1am. I miss home already. I am happy to be back, but I am ready for the fun to start. Last semester was fun. Only it wasn't exactly what I had had in mind.

I am back to the middle. I miss my family and friends but, I know how to deal with it now. I am ready. I am excited for summer. However, I am also excited for this semester to be what I was hoping for in the last one. Cross your fingers for me.

I'm not back to the beginning or square one... instead i'm starting from the middle. Wish me luck.

P.S I love you. :)

Birthdays...

It's officially my birthday. That's right... I'm 19 years old.

Birthdays are a weird concept. We celebrate the day we were born, a celebration of today or that day, yet on our "special day" we're always thinking about the years ahead. How old we're GETting. But, that's to be expected right? Cause we're not getting any younger.

This birthday hit me harder than any of the ones before. Every birthday (or most) seem to have held SOME significance.

At 5, I was ready for school. At 8, in our church, I was excited and ready to be baptized. At 12, I joined the ranks with the other awkward "pre-teens" dying for 13 to come around. And when it did I couldn't wait to be 15 and get my permit. At 16 I was ready to hit the road. (For most people) 17 years old means... R rated movies. At 18 I was legal, ready to buy my cigarettes, lottery tickets and date anyone of any age. (Just kidding, Mom.)

Here I sit... 19 years old. And what's this birthday's significance? I'm almost 20. That's old. In one year I will be TWENTY years old. Where has the time gone? Where are the days where I picked my nose and watched TV ;). The days where I was excited to learn and ready to go. The days where I sat around the house and goofed off with friends. The days where I went out on dates only to be summoned home as soon as the clock came CLOSE to midnight.

Time shows no mercy. I am 19 years old. That is not OK. My childhood is gone. I am more of an adult than I was last year. I want to go back to middle school. I want to go back to when things were easy. When my Mom made my meals and did my laundry. I want to go back to feeling at ease and at home. I want a room that is ALL mine. I want to be in a house where 3 crazy boys are always stirring up trouble.

Instead, while I start the New Year off at home in North Carolina, the majority of it will be spent in the frozen arctic of Provo, Utah. Away from the antics of my little brothers (luckily i'll have Chase), sharing a room half the size of mine now, making my own food, doing SOME/Very Little (Thank you Aunt B) of my laundry, and I will be starting more classes that are probably harder than the last.

19 is different. 19...

  • Nineteen is the 8th smallest prime number.
  • 19 was the emote (in video games) before LOL was used.
  • The nineteenth state to enter the union was Indiana (Shout-out to my roommate Jenna).
  • According to the Qur'an there are 19 angels guarding Hell.
  • 19 is the atomic number of potassium.
  • 19 most often represents selfishness, dependency, inability to see things from others' viewpoints, isolation, greed, theft, self-importance, addiction, aggression, intolerance, ego-centric outlook, abuse of power, disrespect of others, coercion, refusal to seek help from others, and self-centeredness. Success comes after establishing balanced self-sufficiency, yet also a capacity for cooperation and interpersonal skills.
  • According to Stephen King's the Dark Tower "to be" or "to have gone 19" means something has gone wrong or is just plain weird.
  • 19 is an AMAZING Renault car.
  • BUT, most importantly nineteen is the last number to contain the suffix... teen.

Life goes by quickly. For example, this year flew by. ;) It really did. I graduated, went on a cruise/family reunion and finished a semester of college in the blink of an eye. Where is life going?!

Enough of the wishing. Besides other than buying alcohol at 21 nothing good happens after 18. So, enough of the wishing. Enough of the desire to move on to the next chapter of my life. At 19, this is the birthday where I am going to slow down. I am going to stop and appreciate what I have. I am going to enjoy being 19. Because, one day, when I'm older I'll look back and wish to be 19 again.

If there is one thing you can't get back... it's time. And harsh words/hurt feelings, farts and money from that stingy friend. So, I guess that's more than one thing. But, whatever.

"Don't count every hour in the day, make every hour in the day count."
"This time, like all times, is a very good one, if we but know what to do with it." -Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Minutes pass by into hours. And a minute ago is gone forever. Trying to stop and hold onto time is like trying to catch rain. You will catch some of it, little small drops that are teeny in comparison to the rest that is slipping through your fingers. The majority of it will fall, forgotten. But, you will always remember the things that matter and what you had because your hand will always get wet. (Was that a bad analogy? It is 3am.)

Make today count.

Oh. And Happy Birthday to me. :)

Blog is Back!!

So, after reading Aeryn's blog today (http://aerleigh.qwriting.org/), I realized just how much I missed keeping my blog/journal. So, thoughts for the week.

I got a 93 on my Sociology Final!! Yes, that is an A! :) AND what's even better is that it's an A in North Carolina as well!

For my English class we had due dates. Some was due last Wednesday and some the Wednesday before that. I don't have the energy to get the real dates. Sorry. Anyway, so I show up on December the 8th to my English class. The FINAL due date. So, I sit down and begin to brag to my friend Travis about how smart and on top of things I am. I was able to get everything done BY Tuesday. SO... while everyone else would be up cramming and writing bad papers... I would be sleeping.

Except that I had ONE paper I wanted to tweak. But still. I would be done before everyone else... right?! Heres's the conversation:

Me: Ya i'm pretty much done with everything. I got it all done this weekend and yesterday/today.
Travis: No way! I'm jealous. I'll be up until midnight typing my papers I just know it.
Me: Ya. AND I won't have to do any paper extensions.
*Let me digress. Paper extensions- a 2 page single spaced typed list of weird and random things you (the student) would be willing to do for an extension on your paper. For each paper you want an extension on, you have to do one of the things on your list.
Travis: Really? That is good. I have to do two of 'em.
Me: Ya. All I have left is to edit my Personal Narrative. But, that won't take long.
Travis: Wait... Your personal narrative?
Me: Ya?
Travis: hahahahahahahaha That was due last week.
Me: What? No way really?
Mrs. Spencer: Yep. Guess who will be doing an extension list!!
So. Here is the point of this story... I had to do an extension list. Yes. Call me a slacker. But whatever.  Mine was pretty epic. And quite ridiculous I must say. Some of them that were included:
·         Tie a scarf to every limb of my body and wear them around ALL day.
      • Wear my bathing suit over my clothing ALL day.

·         Write love notes to 3 people and hand them to random guys walking by include my number.
·         Wear a pair of boy boxers over my pants.
·         Challenge people walking by to a wizarding duel.
·         Sing 3 primary songs for the class.
·         Make a music video to your choice of song.
·         Lay horizontally on the pavement in front of the Maeser building chanting “Heck no, I won’t go!” And force them to step over/around me.
·         Bring macaroni and cheese for the class.
·         Wear sweats. Sag them. Tape a sign to the shorts underneath that talks about how I turned in my paper late/Dr. Spencer's awesomeness. Your choice.
·         Create a slideshow of baby pictures. Tell my life story.
·         Hold a Q and A with my English class, exposing all my secrets.
·         Declare the day “Abstinence Day.” Shout this out and congratulate people for attending as they walk by.
·         Stand by the Maeser statue and insult everyone who walks by. Extreme fake laugh and explain how I was just joking and their “Dead fish skunk breath really doesn’t smell that bad.”
·         Take pictures of every couple walking by and try to charge them saying I just took their engagement pictures and pictures of this quality aren’t cheap.
·         Respond to everyone in Taylor swift lyrics/titles and movie quotes.
·         Sing (badly) in front of the Wilk.
·         Ask people for a sample of their hair. If they say yes whip out a pair of scissors.
·         Anytime anyone tries to talk to me put my phone to my ear and say loudly how glad I am they just called because some loser was just trying to talk to me.
Yes. All of those. And many more.
Which one did she pick. Take two minutes. Reread the list. Then decide. An even better idea. Print out the list and take it around town. Ask 15 random people if they were in my teacher's shoes which one they would pick.
OK. Have you done all that? Good.
Now guess which one she picked. That's right of all the embarrassing things she could've made me do. She picked the one I put on there without thinking. The one I really didn't want to do but hey there are 60 options. What are the chances?!
She picked bring maccaroni and cheese for the WHOLE class on final's day.
I made FIVE boxes of Kraft maccaroni and cheese.
Two pots. The left one has 3 boxes. The right one has 2.

The ingredients. (Not pictured the 5/4 sticks of butter needed.)
The moral of this story. I will never EVER have (insert number) children that require FIVE boxes of maccaroni and cheese. EVER. And if by the odd chance I do find myself in a situation comparable to the Dugger family (19 and counting TV show on TLC) they:

1.Will not all have names that start with the letter "j" (or the same of any letter for that matter).
2. Will dress in the highest of end fashion.
3. Will eat nothing but cereal for every meal. I'm sorry but if I wanted to run a cafeteria I'd open a soup kitchen.
4. Will NOT be on TV. Unless it pays really well.

OH and to top of this story of fun... I made the 5 boxes. Combined the pots into one giant pot. Walked out the door (aka Tuesday the 14th). Called my friend Travis to make sure it was at 2:30.

THE FINAL IS TOMORROW. Now my English class will be eating DAY old maccaroni and cheese. Nothing says paper extension like day old maccaroni and cheese.

Life Today.

I don't organize my thoughts very well. I don't really say what I want to say sometimes. I feel like a lot of it is just a big list of my day to day activity. But, maybe one day that will be of interest to me.

College. It's fun. Well... for the most part. The work can be overwhelming. But, my social life is slowly becoming non-existent. So, I have plenty of time for work.

I need to move dorms. I have 2 horrible roommates. I have an "eh" family home evening group. Our "sisters" are nice enough but, not interested in being like REAL friends. Our brothers... are a WHOLE different story. 3 are weird. 1 is a BIG black boy. 2 think they are hotter than they are. So, that was a bust.

I am ready for a new ward. New faces. New friends. Well, I have a few i'd like to keep in touch with. Jenna, Nikole and Ashley for starters. Then there's Lewis, Mitchell and Damon. And finally Ammon, Michael and Ashley.

I do enjoy their company for sure. It's not all what I expected. But, instead of moping around, I am trying to make the best of it. A different approach from previous posts.

I don't know what i'll do if I can't find a room to switch into. Probably change my name to Sam and my gender to male and secretly occupy one of the male dorm rooms. It's not my most well-thought-out plan. But it IS a work in progress.

I miss my family a lot. It's hard not seeing them. But I guess it's good practice for the future. When i'm married and living in my Mansion in the mountains on a lake in Colorado. (Boating in the summer. Boarding in the winter. Best of both worlds)

I like to dress cute. I feel weird wearing sweats to class. I've only done it twice so far. I felt like I would do it more but it's like my inner "Linda" is pushing through to my subconscious and driving me to wear my cute clothes EVERYDAY. Which I do. But, my good style hasn't helped make friends.

In fact, I was informed it's the smiley faces in my texts that make people like me. Sad life huh?

I'm getting to bed. School seems kind of pointless. I am getting the work done. I am studying. I just don't feel like i'm learning. I think I have pretty good grades, but I am VERY nervous for my first set of finals in like a week and a half. Wish me luck.

I leave the 18th. YES.
